anyone got good commentaries on 30.1.3 especially on the changing lines about what attitude would be right for the time being especially the changing lines? Could they represent two different options?

Many thanks!!!!

30 is one hex that baffles me completely and seems more negative in the lines than positive.Line 3 is certainly negative and seems to point at despair during a bad time, or anticipating something negative. Both are not the right attitude to take.

Line 1: GOOD SEED - STRONG TREE. It is the morning of this cycle. It is at the beginning of anything new that it is important to exercise clarity of mind and quiet reflection in order to lay good foundations for what is to develop. Maintain correct conduct and you will avoid misfortune.

Line 3: ACCEPTANCE - THAT?S FREEDOM. It is afternoon. Accept the Present Moment. Do not desire that the Present Moment changes. Do not desire that a particular future should arrive. The ?wise one? is not concerned whether the future arrives sooner or later. The ?wise one? knows that the future will come when it is ready, and in whatever form it chooses. Remember what Jesus said: ?Take ye therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself? Was this not the ?wise? speaking? Do this, and you will be free.

Geesh SK...

Your reading gives me all the more faith in the Yi as a trusted friend and counsellor. You asked about attitude, and what did you get? The hexagram which lines are about...what else...attitude. Ask and you shall receive. This is great.

Line 1 is about the proper attitude to take at the beginning of your day...or...the beginning of a relationship...or...the beginning of your adult life. There are so many things going on...so many possibilities. So many directions in which to go. One can become overwhelmed by it all. Stop, sit down, close your eyes, take three deep breaths, relax, become calm...composed...focused...let it all in in that frame of mind and understanding will come. It will all make sense. And you will know what to do.

The attitude in 3 is one I'm very familiar with in terms of a lifetime. I'm at the sunset of my life. I'm 55 years old. The light of youth is going...going...almost gone? *grin* Beating the pot and singing is part of the Chinese alchemy ritual for attaining immortality. I can try desperately to strive for immortality and to hold onto my youth or I can bemoan that I'm getting old and death is approaching nearer. But why would I want to do either...when my age has come with such wonderful gifts.

Confucius said he wanted another 50 years because he didn't really begin to understand until he was 50 years old. I can relate. There's a certain kind of clarity after 50 that brings with it peace of mind...a sturdier, heartier self-confidence...and a growing family. At 40, my daughter left home for college, my nest was suddenly empty and I momentarily felt my life lacked purpose. I had to make some attitude adjustments...quickly. At 54, my daughter gifted me with a grandson. My grandson brought a totally new and different and wonderful purpose to my life. I neither want my youth back...oh no thank...I don't want to go there again, nor do I fear old age and death. I enjoy my life now and look forward to the years to come...watching my grandson grow, welcoming another grandchild or two into the world...loving the people in my life...using my talents...doing my part to make this world a better place to live...and then moving on when it's time to move on.

In terms of a day, this means...rather than try to hold onto the light, sit down on your porch with a nice cup of tea and enjoy the sunset. Sunsets are the most beautiful part of the day. In terms of a relationship, this means don't try to hold onto any of the "things" that new beginnings bring into our lives...the rush...the heart beating wildly...the trembling first kisses...the dinners and flowers. Let the relationship evolve as you two grow familiar with each other...sit down on your porch together with a pot of tea and enjoy the beautiful sunset.

Do not fear the end of the relationship. This is a big mistake that is all too easy to make...for anybody. All relationships end...one way or another, but before they end there is much loving, living and growing to do together. Keep your thoughts on and in the moment of the loving, living and growing. And yours will be a good relationship.

Hexagram 35 is progress through partnership. Wilhelm Baynes uses the image of a good working relationship between master and servant as the prerequisite for progress, but the partnership can be one of so many between two people...husband and wife, artist and business manager, executive and assistant, teacher and student, parent and child, lover and lover. Hexagram 35 says wherever two people come together toward a common goal there is progress.

The message, in short, is stay calm and in the here and now and you will enjoy progress in a partnership.

Love,

Val
