A controversial member of a panel is what keeps a show alive regardless of the opposition they encounter; however skill is required for your influence to find soft ground to take root, something for the audience, though largely biased, to be left chewing on. Even within only a minority, your truth will find its target, and if you make others think, you can continue to walk amongst them in the middle. The only popularity that matters to the executive producers are the ratings the show receives, which translates to their possession: their loss or gain in advertising revenue.
What kind of mail do you suppose Howard Stern received? Rush Limbaugh or Donald Trump? Or on the left, Whoopi Goldberg, Roseann "Rosie" O'Donnell? Elisabeth Hasselbeck has drawn all sorts of fire, yet has taken the No. 1 spot on People With Money’s highest-paid celebrity list for 2015. These controversial figures win rating wars by keeping audiences on their toes. It lends new meaning to the word: popular.
Love it. Maybe you need to gather some evidence of this. Would look great on your resume. If the station uses Arbitron or other rating service, if you can get your hands on one of those reports, you can document audience share during the first and second hour of the show. You're not allowed to photo copy it but you can write down the numbers from it legally. If you could use help knowing which specific stats to look for PM me, but first find out if you could use one from the station. The show host tells me that when I come on, the tweets start flying and the phone lines start lighting up.
