I've been having an interesting time deciphering what the I ching has been trying to tell me regarding questions about a relationship. Finally I had reached a crossroads regarding my own feelings and decided to ask: "will it be best for me to give up in my pursuit of X? I want a clear answer, please." I received 31 with all the lines changing into 41; can you please shed some light on what this means in relation to my question. I could really use the help of someone who understands the I Ching well. Thank you

I find that this is a very good answer to 31 all lines changing:

31. When all lines are changing;

A beverage container must first be opened before its contents may be used, its reason for being fulfilled. But the act of opening also brings with it the possibility for painful loss; the contents may be spilled upon the ground rather than sustaining life. Each of us share similarities with the container; until we open ourselves to others our purpose is not met, our value left untapped. And yet the act of opening up brings the danger of us not being accepted, and our offering spilled instead upon the ground. Intimacy or closeness with others is risky, but necessary. We may often lose such gambles, and suffer for it. But occasionally we may win. And in many cases, a single win might be worth a thousand losses. And the thousand losses prerequisites for the single win. Take the chance, but see it for what it is, and realize that there are no guarantees.

But hopefully, sages from hereabouts will be along shortly with their much more apt wisdom.

Q: are you being unsuccessful in your pursuit of X or are you unsure whether you want to pursue X? I only ask so I can understand the answer better

Thank you for your help, it is appreciated greatly.

Initially I was unsuccessful, which can be attributed to my acting impulsively and not allowing the correct timing and opportunities to present themselves. Recently, things have taken a noticeable turn for the better. I have taken a few steps back and allowed things to progress naturally. The reason I ask if I should continue is because I am unsure if the end result will be harmonious.

My previous questions have left me confused so I wanted an answer one way or the other. What you posted helps me make some sense of the confusion. As perhaps I was to focused on the destination and would instead do good to focus on the journey, where ever it may lead me. I am eager for any further clarification, however what you have given me has already helped immensely - thank you!

aditionally, I can see in this reading the se3nse of casting off (41) the baggage of pursuing someone, all the yearning wanting angling etc. will lead to influence. ie. you have more influence on the situation by reducing your actions. So yes stop pursueing, but the end to the pursuit may be a beginning for something else, which is another way to see 31, leave a space open for somebody to come in, at the moment that space is filled with anxiety, empty it out.

Hi Sniffums,

Your reading is an interesting one to me.
Here are a couple of things that came to my mind for this reading..
But they are just random thoughts to mabye help you come up with something on your own...

31: Are there powers that attract the 2 of you? Is it mutual? Is the possible attraction only sexual, or does the attraction cover more grounds? Is someone overstepping their bounds? What is the influence this person has on you and vice versa?

All lines changing in 31: It seems like this reading is telling you to consider the entire philosophy behind Hexagram 31 and to include all of the lines. 31's lines carry an ongoing theme that could be looked at. Each line influencing a different part of the body. Since your reading did not pin down a specific line/body area, it could be looked at more as the energy moving through the different parts of the body and it's influence on you or the other person. Or perhaps looking at the fact that there are different kinds of influences in this world and how they affect different aspects of you and others around you. This hexagram's lines always make me think of Chakras and how they organize energy into different body parts....

Random thoughts about the lines:
Line 1: Big Toe - First Steps; the IDEA of an influence or the very first inkling of an influence.

Line 2: Calves of the Legs - Making sure to keep composure and not over react.

Line 3: Thighs - Emotional influence and movement; Hasty decisions without thought. Contagious influence.

Line 4: Thoughts/Mind - Influence of thoughts on the self; Inner dialog and visions and how they affect you and the people around. Letting go and letting loose. To let influence have it's way and your thoughts to freely and truely come out.

Line 5: Back of Neck - This is where a strongness of character prevents influence that can hinder true character. Primitive instincts and vibes. Subconscious influence that almost seems to be protecting us.

Line 6: Jaws/Cheeks/Tongue - How words influence others; How influence affects our very own words.

41: Is this a good relationship (Are one of you acting as though it IS even though it is not)? Is a time of simplicity needed? Is inner strength the real thing that needs cultivation for a relationship to take place?

Mountain and Lake/ :D /Lake and Mountain:

31 with Lake on top of Mountain suggests Joy outside and Stillness within.

41 with Mountain on top of Lake suggests Stillness outside and Joy within.

The Yi seems to be suggesting the 2 be flipped and maybe the current situation is Joy on the outside and Stillness within...

..but to benefit, you would need the opposite, Stillness outside (reserve) and Joy within (inner happiness from the self).

Take care,
-AQ

Thank you all for all of your help. Your words have helped me put things in perspective and have given me peace of mind. I will stop pursuing; the part about having joy within and stillness outside made an especially lasting impression. I do not usually seek advice, but this was very important to me and I am grateful to all that read and or answered my questions. I can already feel the weight being lofted off my being, I cannot fathom how I have been carrying it for so long. Much love to you all - best wishes

I'm always curious about all lines changing, there never seems to be a definite answer as to how they should be interpreted, so I'm grateful to have your example for study. It does look as if stopping the pursuit is the way to go with the joy within and stillness outside.

Looking over what AQ said above and relating to Bradford, I also wonder if the all lines changing might not be describing the progress of your interactions with this person. And also, looking at the line 3 - is there another person in the picture somewhere? Anyway, don't worry about answering this post, it's just to contribute to the general pool of posts and help me not forget about what I thought regarding this particular hex configuration, however it would help if at some point in the future, when this issue is resolved for you, you come back and tell us how it played out.
All the best.

Yes. Do tell us how it pans out if you think of it.

Precision Grace - yeah, I never exactly know what to think about all lines changing. But it does just make me think every time that I need to pay attention to the philosophy as a whole of that particular hex. What actually confuses me more is if one get, say, 4 or 5 lines changing.. because then we are not quite reading the entire philosophy, but we are sometimes getting conflicting advice. Sometimes they are opposites. I suppose gut feelings help a great deal in those situations. Or maybe they tell a story.

This 31 was a good one to ponder..... (Thanks Sniffums)
And good luck!
