Hi can anyone please help me with interpreting this answer hex 36, lines 2,4,5 and 6 changing to hex 1 ? Awhile ago my car was stolen and I have received a small amount of insurance money. I could, if I wish, go into debt to buy another one or I could join a community car scheme or I could do neither. I realise this is a funny kind of question to dither over. I've always had a car but for some reason I just don't feel right about buying another (normally I would just rush out and get one, regardless).

Anyway whichever way I put the question, to buy or to join community scheme I received this answer, twice running now, which suggests theres something I'm not seeing.

Can anyone help me see whats probably in front of my nose ? Or has anyone got any general view of how they'd interpret 36 > 1, even if not car related ?

I'm trying but I'm not seeing, all I'm seeing is about escaping something negative

and I can't figure how buying or not buying is escaping something hostile ?

(hmmm I noticed we just passed 36 in the I Ching on the I Ching thread)

Anyway any thoughts gratefully received, cos I'm stuck on this one.

Hi, Void. Interesting reading.

If I got this reading concerning a question such as yours, here's how I'd see it:

First, I'd have to laugh at line 2, IE: a wounded leg and a strong horse. Pretty good picture of the situation, huh?

Line 4, I'd interpret as "getting to the heart of the matter", specifically your heart. IE: what is the real reason for your reluctance to get another horse? This seems important to understand before a decision can be reached whether or not to buy a new car. Is there, for example, a sense of freedom you feel about being liberated from ownership of a car? Is there fear that something will happen with your job, and you'll be stuck with payments? These are the sorts of things I consider when receiving line 4.

Line 5 could be seen as allowing a certain amount of "craziness", either in buying or choosing not to buy the car. It could also be a way of explaining your decision (either way) to others, who you feel might judge you by your choice. These are the kinds of things only you know about, because these things are hidden deep inside your earth.

Hex. 1 can be seen either as a creative solution or as the force driving this to be an issue for you. I'm inclined toward the former.

There's something more here than what meets the eye. Getting to the source of your dilemma seems important, before you can make a clear decision.

Hi Void:

I agree with you. It does seem negative. Maybe it's more about events surrounding the situation leading up to or during your dealing with the car situation. I also don't see how it relates to the car situation - except that it may not be in your best interests NOT to have your own car. Maybe get something inexpensive temporarily??

Here's a summary of what I take from the lines (what I consider meaningful from the text).

Line 2:

The injury of the 2nd line is more serious than that of the bottom line.
At the bottom line the bird is still able to fly, while at the 2nd line it has become difficult to walk.

to get aid from a strong horse.
But the injury is not fatal; it is only a hindrance.
Rescue is still possible.

Line 3:

But in abolishing abuses one must not be too hasty.
This would turn out badly because the abuses have been in existence so long.

Line 4:

This line is associated with a historical event.
This line stands near the lord of darkness; thus it finds out his inmost sentiment and can take itself out of danger in good time.
Staying on would mean sacrificing oneself to no purpose.
We realize there is no hope for improvement and thus we are enabled to leave the scene of disaster before the storm breaks.

Line 5:

In order to escape danger, you need invincible perseverance of spirit and redoubled caution in dealings with the world.

Line 6:

In this situation one must remain faithful.
First he held a position through which he might have been able to enlighten all the people of the realm.
Instead, he made it his business to inure men and thus transgressed the rule that binds one who governs; as a result he prepared his own downfall.
----------------

I'm curious if this gives you more insight - let me know.

Hi Void

My view of this is very similar to Bruce's.
36 is about searching for the heart of the matter while clinging to the I ching philosophy of detachment and acceptance when things seem tough.
I just want to add that the change to 1 is very positive indeed not negative, it tells you that the Sage works in a zigzag and mysterious ways.i.e. the loss of your car was meant to happen for reasons that are for now unapparant to you,but later on, in retrospect will prove to be a blessing in disguise no matter what decision you take...with a little "darkening of the light" you will be lead to the right decision anyway.

How about the hexigram relating to buying cars and dodgy car salesmen.Line 2- and 4 escaping from car dealers. line 5 and 6 after a time you purchase a car that is right for you.

Thanks all for some excellent responses. Bruce when I read your "what is the real reason for your reluctance to get another horse" it made me laugh. Somehow putting it like that really hones the issue down. (Why does this cowboy not want a horse ? lol) I think you are spot on actually, theres more to this than meets the eye.

I do feel a sense of liberation without a car, very unexpectedly, (of course I also miss the great convenience.) Knowing this is going to sound very 'new age' sorry but in a strange way I also feel more 'grounded' which of course I am literally - but more grounded as in 'on the ground' thats just a feeling, I can't adequately explain why that suits me right now, but it does.

Also lack of car has prevented me from entering one or two situations that have definately been to my benefit, I mean it was to my benefit not to be able to go.

Your interpretation of line 5 fits perfectly, there seems something crazy going on here to me and to others in that it does not appear a logical stance I'm taking, but seems right at the moment.

Lagunader yes i think the universe or the Sage whatever you wish to call it, my own higher self ? does indeed work in mysterious ways and I knew I smelt a zigzag in this situation which makes me let the situation lie without 'rectifying' it, though as time passes I ask Yi because I think I'm acting strange, lol.

Peace yes thanks but I already had those commentaries/images just needed help processing the whole reading.

I am going to remain a cowgirl without a horse awhile longer. I think theres a reason for it. Maybe I have not quite reached the absolute 'heart' of it yet, but I think this time of darkening (of my transport situation)is up to something.

BTW Stuart thanks for your answer but I think like Bruce says I have to get to the reason of not wanting a car, when it makes little sense
not to want one.

Its so weird how much difference its made to my sense of self in the world - not just in a practical way, something more to do with consciousness. I think when it was stolen I may have said already I even felt a sense of relief !!

How crazy is that ? How can you be relieved not to have a car ? Hmmm thats my crazy making I think of 36,5.

Void,

Glad it connected.

Actually, it's really not so crazy to experience relief from a loss. We sometimes feel all-too-owned by our possessions and obligations. I do think we need to be careful though, in that our elation in the present can cause difficulty in the future. (Don?t ask how I know!) Especially if we hadn't made provision to buy back our mobility when we need it. "But, oh well, heaven's watching and knows my life better than I do." How crazy is that!!! It's really crazy, and maybe that's exactly the kind of crazy you have been looking for in your life.

For what it's worth, I get an over all good feeling about this.

Hi Void,
I wonder if the change to hexagram 1 is refering to the community car idea? 36 being you no longer having a personal car and then 1 this new arrangement?
I stopped driving about 4 years ago and while I need to take a cab now and then, for the most part I don't miss it a bit. In fact, after I make the IChing dvd I'm going to write a book called "Life Within Walking Distance," all about the subculture out here that gets along just fine on foot.
