I knew this not:
CURFEW - The word "curfew" comes from
the French phrase "couvre-feu", which means "cover the fire". It
was used to describe the time of blowing out all lamps and
candles. It was later adopted into Middle English as “curfeu"
which later became the modern "curfew". In the early American
colonies homes had no real fireplaces so a fire was built in the
center of the room. In order to make sure a fire did not get out
of control during the night it was required that, by an agreed
upon time, all fires would be covered with a clay pot called-a
“curfew".

Very nice.

There's an association between 36 and dreaming, for me.

Also... during the second war, the UK imposed a blackout at night to avoid giving the German bombers anything to aim at. There can be good reasons for hiding your light.

in what sense?!?

not only the UK, I know it was like that throughout all Europe, and I remember people telling me how they would use a particular paint to screen the windows so they could have light inside but not be seen outside - I don't know which hexagram that would be

36 and dreams? There were some readings that made the connection for me, but just generally: night, light under the earth, awareness hidden away 'underground', things you know under the surface, the core potential (nuclear hexagram) of Release... all that.

Witney was mostly a safe destination for evacuees, out in the country - but it was bombed once. I was lucky enough in my early days as a volunteer to get to know lots of people who'd lived through the war. If they talked about those times, there was still muttering about how someone must have broken the blackout, and who it might have been. They all understood the importance of hiding your light.

Yes, all of these hexagrams have multiple connotations. Often it is in our best interests not to divulge certain types of information, or even divulge aspects of ourselves to others who might use that information to cause us problems. But even more, a more mature person cannot communicate his or her ideas to someone less mature because the less mature cannot process that information or will convert it into something they can understand, and the message is compromised in multiple way. Or it is perverted. Just because we know the meaning of words does not mean we fully comprehend the subject.

Also, there are evil people, as in the case historically here, that will use divulged information to perpetrate their own nefarious plans. Sometimes wisdom requires that we be careful what we divulge. In the same way, it would be best not to divulge the secrets of the I Ching to a materialistic scientist because he or she would sneer at us, and consider us unscientific, uninformed, and believers in superstition. And you are not going to win the argument, even with superior information.

So there are many ways to "hide your light." Both literally and figuratively. The case of the German bombers is one that could be taken very literally. Of course, in today's warfare, it wouldn't matter, because the whole earth is analyzed and geometrically positioned, but there are "figurative" ways to "hide your light" even then.

This hexagram has a very familiar tone with the Christian concept of "Cast not your pearls before the swine." Why inform someone of something they can't understand and are bound to misinterpret, or even sneer at you and despise you? It is just not necessary.

Well because one always hopes that people are going to understand
Since we all have the means to..

But maybe when 36 comes up it is not the right time, we won't be understood
