I am not a very high energy person although I am social and I have a lot of friends.

But usually my energy level is not very high and I tend to drift toward laziness and even lethargy. Sometimes it is just a total drag to make myself do things...I force my self, but I cannot wait to finish and be inactive again.

I asked Yi Jing: how can I raise my energy level?

I got 37.4 changing into 13.

I am really not sure how to read this...it is true that I don't have any family and many problems (my legal stuff and this and that...) - is this draining me?
And what would 13 as friendship suggest? I have good friends, not too many, but some of big quality.

I don't understand the message...could someone help clear it up for me, please?

Thank you!

I think it has something to do with your family as role-models and motivators. I don’t know the details of your situation, but I would look in to the family dynamic.

For example, sometimes individuals of greater “privilege” may become lazy because they didn’t have much responsibility in life. Maybe they had nannies or parents that did everything for them,. Maybe they were a little spoiled.

Or, sometimes parents are too self-absorbed and concerned with keeping up a lifestyle that they just work all of the time and don’t give their child enough attention or cultivate purpose and a sense of motivation in the child. Some parents are too lax about rules and structure and if there aren't consequences to actions then you wouldn't learn how to hold yourself accountable.

Again, I don’t know your situation, but line 4 of hex 37 seems to point to you being the “treasure of the house”, making me think you had a lot done for you, and perhaps didn’t learn self-motivation.

Or, are you the youngest child and had older brothers and sisters who took on most of the responsibility? I’ve seen this too. My little sister is like this and we did not come from a family of privilege, I think she just had others who took on more so she never had to.

I would look first at the family dynamic and then go from there to see what you can learn from that and perhaps this awareness might help you raise your energy

You are not lazy, you are a treasure ! You have to bear in mind frenetic activity is used by many as a socially approved method of escapism - from the self, from thinking, from feeling, from all sorts of things. I saw somewhere on TV or something the other day , while being lazy, as apes we are pre programmed to do what we have to do then rest - to conserve energy, it makes sense. When did you last see a jogging gorilla ? You don't - they spend alot of time lazing about eating, just like we like to do except our food is way more calorific.

My take on your answer is to rethink your thoughts about being lazy as to me 37.4 doesn't show someone squandering resources it shows someone using resources wisely like a wife in the family. She is the 'treasure' because she manages the resources , brings wealth to the family. Family doesn't have to mean blood family here but what is 'home' you either physically or psychologically, those closest to you. Alternatively i guess you may wish to consider if you are using way too much energy on keeping your inner circle ie your close friends etc happy ? Only you know if that depletes you - but then i think if that were depleting you you would have more likley got something like hexagram 41.

Being social and having lots of friends as you describe yourself takes alot of energy - maybe its just that. You give alot in these friendships, you are highly valued in them - a 'treasure' perhaps you underestimate your role in these relationships ?

Thinking further I think we feel lazy when we just aren't very interested in whats happening. In 37.4 someones at the heart of the inner group, the home. Could be saying to raise your energy fully involve yourself with nourishing and supporting what is 'home' to you. Like i said this might be on all sorts of levels - maybe just physical stuff like actually taking care of your home, eating good food etc or extending your caring to your friends etc. Either way raising your energy here isn't about going out into the world more but cultivating the 'inner', inner self, inner 'home', inner circle.

I couldn't agree more with Trojan - what an amazing post!

Change your perspective on 'active', on 'doing' and rushing about.
You are the treasure of the house - this is a compliment!
You enrich people around you, your closest, and 13 says 'your friends'.
You are valuable to them, just by being yourself.
You can't measure 'success' by how much you actually did, physically, in a day.
Look at how you enrich people, how valuable you are to them.

Again i'll ditto Trojan - cherish your home. A good clean up of the house, for
example, or in general valuing your own little every day moments, can work
wonders for someone's energy levels. I always feel better in a clean house!
(perhaps because im very much like you, quite lazy, or rather glued
to the computer, so when i finally do something it's even more pleasurable
to sit back and do nothing afterwards) (which came first, laziness or the
computer :))
Look after your home, and your friends, and all is, and will continue to be
just fine!

It could be time to take stock of the real value you have. Perhaps sometimes you think you are not needed or that your contribution is insignificant. Recognizing that your role is valuable could give you a confidence boost that might make you WANT to get out there and do more.

Hello to all,

I am really grateful for your insights - you really helped me change my perspective!

I am sorry I am late with my reply, but I was cut off from the internet for quite a while.

I truly appreciate your inputs - what you say, makes very much sense. Maybe I do underestimate myself and it is true that my friends do value me a lot...I do tend to underestimate my role. I don't have too many friends...but enough and good ones. I do dedicate energy for them, to be there for them, I spend a lot of beautiful moments with them, share, talk, laugh...and listen. as they do for me.
I really like your input, trojan, ha, ha, I did imagine gorillas jogging or exercising - ha, ha, a truly hilarous view:)

It is true, yes, that people are getting more and more obsessed with activity...I am certainly not among them, ha, ha. Maybe this is indeed a quality that I should appreciate.

Openhearts, what you say is also significant, but I was not really a person without responsibilities. It is true that my mum was never forcing me to do stuff but I was very dedicated to things that were meaningful to me, like studies, art, etc.

You really hit some significant points...I do underestimate my value, I do feel it is insignificant and maybe this is what I should work on...thank you all, this was really helpful! Amazing answers!
