Hello!
I asked I Ching whether a person close to me is a narcissist, because that is what i was fearing in the end.
So I got 40.2 > 16....
What confused me was whether Iching tells me - Right on, she is (killing 3 foxes with 1 arrow) - talking about clearing doubts??
But then 16 says - there is a self-deception on my side?
I am totally confused....Please help! What do you think?

I suppose you could read that as an affirmation.

line 2 is about achieving freedom and relief from tension by conquering negative elements in the inner or outer world. In this case, it might mean that the Yi is answering quite directly and you are correct in your judgment. Take steps to maintain your integrity by not engaging with this person any more than is necessary.

Or it may refer to you. By that I mean the response may reflect your own hidden "foxes" on this point.

Overall however, I think that's a pretty clear answer.

I'll second Topal's alternative interpretation possibilities; but with not one but three foxes in this hunt, more than one or two possibilities is possible. For example, IT, it may speak to the chemistry between the two of you, such as excitable competitiveness - 1+1=3. There is you, her, and the interaction of the two of you.

The core of the reading is 40, which speaks of letting go, possibly letting go of the idea of narcissism altogether.

Thanks a lot! After reflecting on it I think sooo is more closer to the answer...Might be me wrong...and need to drop the idea of narcissism in this case...

I agree. These kinds of questions: "Is X so and so?" - the Yi rarely answers. It is much more suited to reflection/personal, inner issues as to what might prompt such a line of questioning in the first place.

Could the Yi be telling you to focus on how you feel about and respond to what she does rather than on what she is or isn't?

There is some self-deception or false enthusiasm as i saw it (16) and then there is a strong statement
that doubts were caught as foxes...So maybe it's telling me - You are falsely presuming something and so sure about it....i dont know...

My feeling about this question is that it's really not productive or meaningful. I mean most of us have so called 'narcissistic' qualities but I think it is best not to trap someone in your thinking into a sort of box. What's really relevant is what has already been said - the quality of relating that's going on. No one is 'a this' or 'a that', but how you feel about the other is probably more to the point...?
