Hi All,

I recently had an upset at work where being promised a big bonus nothing appeared. This was after busting my tail for over 8 months in anticipation of the reward.

I recently started looking for new jobs and see many that pay much higher in a different state so I asked the IChing: "Should I relocate?" and I reveived 40. Hsieh - Deliverance with no changing lines and I am at a total loss as to interpret this.

At one point it seems to say that the tension are almost over, but it also says If there is still something where one has to go,Hastening brings good fortune.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this reading.

Thank you,

-- jj

I am new to this, but maybe I can help. One thing I have learned here is not to ask yes or no questions. So, if you think it would help you to find clarity perhaps ask something like "how would it benefit me to relocate"? And "how would it benefit me to stay"? Your answer 40 deliverance does not seem to give a yes or no, but it does sound auspicious. Seems you have a choice, almost like the question was redirected back to you, as if you have the answer inside you. "If there is a reason to move forward do so, if not don't? " Seems you will make the right decision and have freedom from anything that has hindered you. Hope this helps or maybe someone with more experience will come along with a much better answer. :)

Dear jjones,

I also don't see in your reading a straight answer either. It is not like the Yi is saying "yes, off you go" ;) It is more like, as blue angel said, that you have a choice. Hexagram 40 represents release, so you free yourself from pressure or tension, for example, or from something that blocks your progress and growth, and so on. Wilhelm's translation reads:
"If there is no longer anything where one has to go, return brings good fortune. If there is still something where one has to go, hastening brings good fortune."

So, the way I see it you have to balance your options here. If you think that you can get over the bonus issue and the job is worth keeping, and you can let go bad feelings, then you go back to work and get on with it. On the other hand, if you think that you have come to a standstill, you have prospected better opportunities out there and your career can progress further, then you would be better off making a move.

Hope it helps :bows:

Dear JJones,
How curious: I have come to consult the memorizing thread about hex. 40 and there you are with your question! Now I have to say that, in my experience, hex. 40 revealed itself as much more favourable than I thought, so this is to encourage you. I agree with the others: this hex. is not telling you: "go and win!", but it is surely telling you: "Have no fear: your problems are about to vanish, the obstacles to be removed." Just think about what you want and act accordingly. Hope this helps. Hugs.

Let me put a little different light on this, as I see things a little differently. First, as far as a yes or no question, I do not see this as such because the intent is to find the implications of moving, which is not specifically yes or no.

Now, since the question was whether you should relocate, the answer needs to be read in that relationship, and the answer says, first, " The southwest furthers." Southwest is a symbol for retreat. Second, the commentary says, "tensions and complications begin to be released." But when? Since the question was about going, then I interpret it as complications being eased when you go. Third, it says, "we ought to make our way back to ordinary conditions." What ordinary conditions? Since the question was about going I would interpret it as meaning when we go we are returning to ordinary conditions. Next, the commentary speaks of "sudden change." When are we most likely to see sudden change? When we leave. Finally, the commentary speaks of making a "clean sweep." This would indicate in the context of this particular question that we need to make radical change.

This being said, I would not recommend going before a job is secured, but once that is done, it might be a very good move.

I agree whole hearted with Amalia on this. After reading I recall receiving hexagram 40 when asking about a trip (vacation I was contemplating). I went on the trip, and I had an amazing time. Past grievances were completely resolved. Best wishes to you.
