Hi there:

I cannot figure out what this hexagram means. Based on Huang and Wilheim, I just don't get it. I thought it was the same as 49 - Revolution, but based on Huang, he says Eliminating and Carol Anthony talks about resolute - which I don't even know what that means.

Anyway, I got it unchanging - so it must be significant for me to understand.

Please help....

Hi Rosalie,

LiSe has shed light on 43 that I have found to be insighful. She calls it "the speaking staff". The idea is that there are times when one has to announce one's self, proclaim something important about one's nature, intentions or purpose.

From her website:

"Speaking out one?s conviction, or holding up one's dignity, can be a dangerous venture, but it is necessary for a clean and healthy heart ? and it may also benefit the rest of the world.

Don?t keep still, but take care. Evaluate the possibilities and if it is necessary. Avoid fighting; there are better ways that give more results. Reckon with people?s ability to understand ? or their not being able to. And especially with the reactions of those in power. Nobody will benefit by your losing your head."

as a universal 43 covers the notion of 'seeding' as compared to its structural opposite, 23, that focuses on 'pruning'.

For its full spectrum see:

http://www.iimetro.com.au/~lofting/myweb/lofting/x011111.html

architectually, it is linked to 44 (as 44 is linked to it) and so a basic, generic, theme on persuation etc but with all of that yang (and a yang base) is 'intensly' done, a 'single context' focus.

43 pairs with 01 but 43 is unconditional (spread the word far and wide but it is "MY" word, "THE" word and so competes with a lot of others but with a more cooperative aire (the influence of wind in the top position. Thus the hexagram trigrams, read bottom to top, read "with/from perseverence (heaven in lower) comes increasing influence (wind in upper")

OTOH, 01 is conditional, a particular focus, more competitive etc etc.

I'm currently translating 43.0 thus:
<blockquote>Resoluteness.
Raising the matter at the king's court,
asserting the truth.
It is dangerous to tell the city oneself,
it is better not to battle immediately.
It is beneficial to have a goal to move to.</blockquote>
The situation here is that one has a problem with someone, and talking things out will probably not work and just lead to a fight or counter measures. One therefore resorts to an arbitrator or mediator.

Um... not quite how I've seen it so far. I think a good name for it is 'Deciding' - sometimes it just means 'make your mind up already'. (Especially if you've asked a string of related questions.)

What you decide has to do - I think - with who you are, and what you do and don't accept in your life. Raising the matter at the king's court can mean starting at the centre, convincing the key people (not least yourself) first, before you try to tell anyone else.

Like LiSe says, there are no guarantees about the reaction you'll get. But what works here is not defensiveness, no 'taking up arms', but having a positive goal in mind.

There is an article on this hexagram at Denis Mair's site:

- very good.
