45.1.5 --> 51 - New Years toss

Hi All,

I did my traditional new years reading on the 1st (What is the outlook on my life in 2013?) and received 45.1.5 and 51. Gathering makes perfect sense to me, because as of last June, I left academia and joined a start up education company, founded by a former colleague of mine, which shares my vision of teaching and helping kids carve out their academic path. Even the "sacrifice" part of the reading fits because in order to join the company I had to move to a new city, leaving my new wife, who is finishing school, behind. She should be joining me in a few months, but best case scenario we will have been apart for over a year before we're together again. (We see each other every other weekend or so). Despite the sacrifices, I love my job and feel for the first time totally committed to what I'm doing.

My real question is about 51, Shocking. I'll admit this hexagram always worries me, even though I know it isn't necessarily negative and can even be very good. So I asked a follow up question (What is the nature of the shocking event mentioned in my last reading?) and received 2.1.2 --> 19, The Receptive changing to Promotion (my wife's new years reading received Promotion as her primary hexagram, for what it's worth). The reading mentions the need to stem the deterioration of the situation, as well as ridding myself of artifice, leading to success. But frankly, I'm not sure how this relates to a "shocking" situation.

Any advice or insights are greatly appreciated, and I hope everyone is having a wonderful new year!

51 can also be understood as a new way of thinking or doing things. Doesn't necessarily have to be a slap in the face, it can just be a heureka moment

I hadn't thought of that, kkappa. Thanks for the new perspective. It certainly makes sense given the initial hexagram and my interpretation of the changing lines.

I interpret the 51 as being the context in which you asked your question, and so the 51 would indicate the tremendous amount of motion or movement you have just been through with the move away from your wife, and even with traveling back and forth to see her now. In other words, in my understanding you are already experiencing the movement of hexagram 51.
