Hi lovely people,

I've been struggling to varying degrees for years to feel some vitality in my life, and it's been an uphill battle; it seems I've battled limited resources forever and never been able to live the kind of creative, energetic life I have only had glimpses of. I've worked hard to be healthy, to be making art (my lifelong core value), to maintain a spiritual practice, to overcome trauma and have strong relationships, to be financially stable. But this past year I had no work and had to give up my studio, then had to move in a very stressful housing market, then finally got what I thought would be a good job only to find it so exhausting and draining that I have nothing left over (50 hour week, 3 hours a day of commuting, a company where I don't really belong at all). I've been deeply depressed and defeated, gaining weight, lonely and isolated (I'm naturally an introvert but long for a partner), feeling like I have no fuel in my tank and just surviving this job is all I can do (I'm nine weeks in).

Today I saw my acupuncturist and we talked about chi, and I've been thinking about how long it's been since I felt energetic and optimistic, and wondering if I should really make a radical departure from the past and present somehow. I asked the I Ching how to recover my life force, and got 46.1 changing to 11. A lovely reading, but I'm not sure how it translates to action and improvement and steps to take. If you have any thoughts I'd be very grateful!! Thank you. If it matters, I'm 57, so all of this is in the context of also feeling old and fairly regretful about bad choices in the past.

46.1 into 11 is a particularly lovely reading. To me, it hints--affirms, even-- that if you begin to take steps towards recovery and rejuvenation, you will be successful. The possibility is there if you make the effort (pushing upward). As far as how-- the first line describes the very beginning of growth, of the roots, of a humble place ("the power to rise comes from this low and obscure station"). It's saying you have the power in the place in life you are currently in. You need to summon it and use it in your push upwards towards harmony and peace (11). I wonder who, if anyone, are your allies-- " there is a spiritual affinity with the rulers above". You don't like your new job, how were you hired for it? Who saw you as an asset to their business, and why?

I also see 46.1 as an urge for you to exercise. Can you join a gym, a running group, some kind of group athletic activity?

Best of luck & many blessings that things begin to improve. This reading is very encouraging.

What a lovely and thoughtful reply, Mulberry. Thank you so much! Yes, I was recruited for the position by a former boss, but I'm not sure why, or how she saw me as right for it, as she hasn't been happy with anything I've done so far, and it's an awkward cultural fit (I'm much older than almost everyone there). I have to move again soon, so I have some decisions to make about committing to this job and whether I'll be able to keep the rest of my life alive while doing it. But I'm encouraged by this reading and by your comment.

I hope this doesn't sound dismissive, Sabina, but life does seem to work a bit like a book - in chapters. This chapter of your life seems not so unusual, and facing it alone can be especially difficult. Many with partners are also alone in these personal struggles. Philosophically the context of 11 fits with chi originating from the bottom, and 46.1 also shows this root as being the source of renewal, starting at the very bottom. This would imply to me a new phase of growth. Watering this new growth with bitterness of the past isn't going to help to grow at all, it is poisonous. So putting all those past errors, which I think is common to all of us to some degree, is not going to help this vitalization process. One must first renew patience, as this will not be an overnight change but a step by step ascension toward a new view of your life. This begins in the root, the foundation of your being, and whatever grows will grow from this root. Will it be a root of bitterness? A root of new life and a new vision? This is vitally important and requires first a refreshed view of who and what you are. Old beliefs may have to be revisited, rethought, to be renewed. Old self images may need to be recreated, in touch with the time of life, not comparing it to bygone days. This is a new time and must be approached with new understanding, a different kind of vitality, more in line with endurance than with sprints. All things are transitory and trying to relive the past is futile as is continuing to mourn past mistakes. Approach this chapter as starting again from the root. Your current experiences are not unusual, being hired for your experience but expecting unrealistic results without fundamental training in a new environment and possible job description entirely, or being expected to run with the same energy alongside the young. That's not realistic. Finding your own pace and allowing your maturity to work the way maturity works, not comparing the way you work as though you were 24. Develop your strengths and manage your weakness. This is what your manager must realize, or else find a place who understands this fundamental principle. Unfortunately young managers have a difficult time with this because they are still operating from their young roots. You should be in your prime, but not prime in the same way as when you were 24.

11 strikes a perfect balance of chi, of potential, but it must be potential in accord with the time of your life. Energy arises from the bottom and moves upward into the receptive. This principle is ageless. But it takes time, and you are beginning again at the root of your being. Be patient with yourself and ask others to be likewise.

Hi Sabina,

You've already received some excellent advice here and yes, Hex.46 is a very encouraging and appropriate response from the I Ching. There are several areas in your life which seem to be causing unrest and over time these will weaken your life-force which is probably why the I Ching is urging you to regain a sense of peace. This, more than anything else, will stop the dissipation of life-force from which you are suffering. Approach your situation with confidence in the I Ching's prediction of great success - belief in this will begin the process of regaining peace. Understand fully that your recovery will proceed in steps and cannot be undertaken in one stroke. The ego often demands INSTANT GRATIFICATION and sees anything else as a failure but if you can realistically prioritise your needs in accordance with importance and available time that would be a good start. Don't allow your ego to oppress you with fear, doubt, regret etc but learn to empty the mind and dwell in a simple abiding presence. The most important quality here is one of quiet, patient determination. Best Wishes. Peter

You might cultivate an appreciation of the energies of nature like Anna Atkins, commemorated by today's Google doodle. If you live in the northern hemisphere, you have been subject to the negative influence of winter. Grow a fragrant flowering pot plant, like a petunia. (I have one myself.) Get out into open spaces -- gardens, parks, fields, woods. The world will seem brighter.
