I have a question about this line and whether it is about keeping oneself away from an old issue or showing there's something that needs to be tended to . .
Since the well is not a temporary structure it seems more fitting to clear it up but then no one goes to an old well so maybe better to not stir up the mud :)confused::confused::confused:)

I've received this line on various occasions but it's still not clear to me -any ideas/experiences??

Seems that there is a sense of the well not being deep, but instead the walls are broken down, the well water is mixed with mud and the surrounding area is boggy and wet. It is not clear where is the well and where is the surrounding dry land. If you do not clear it up, then it can never function as a well, but only as a boggy mess. Either clear up this well, or dig a new well. The purpose of the well is to provide refreshing water.

The Zhi Gua for this line is 05, Waiting (for the rains to come)
The well may have silted up, but this is also the condition of a well in a drought.
Either way, it is also the best time (or the only good time) to dig the well a little deeper.

I got this when the news was that an elderly relative had declined and had become even more frail.

I got this line when asking about someone who had been sick but who was slowly getting better. There were more moving lines than just the bottom line moving ... indicating that the body's vital force, which had at one point been seriously depleted (48.1), was gradually being restored to a healthy level (48.5).

As you've probably noted, the progression is from an abandoned and silted up well through a process of repair to a wholesome place of sustaining water

Hex 5 continues this progression-- water becomes clouds, source of rain to replenish the well.

One does not drink mud from the bottom of the well. Even animals ignore it. There is nothing to be gained in churning up old issues. Wait for the rains (Hex 5) to bring some renewal to your situation. Meanwhile, either clean out the garbage and dig the well deeper (as Bradford suggests) or repair and reline the well, as indicated in line 4.

A well is a landmark, evokes memories, and reminds us of what once was. So even if a well does not provide water, it still has higher uses. Past issues are like a disused well. They no longer discomfort and can be reflected on to see how we have grown.

hi folks

thank you all for the hints and advice, you've been of great help.

Dana your image was just brilliant! I wonder if you've come across this landscape or seen it as metaphor, no matter what, it was a real eye opener

Brad, "it is also the best time (or the only good time) to dig the well", there's no time like now then . . thanks for the tips :)

I think somewhere deep down the question is really about whether one wants to take responsibility for the well or just wants to sit back and wait. And sometimes it's us that sit under the weight of the mud, sometimes the well doesn't sit even remotely near to our property. But a well is a well is a well, the clearer the water, the better for all I guess.

Ginnie it was great reading your examples. I remember that frailty has played a role in all occasions I got this line for, sometimes an underground, hidden frailty too. And some sense of uneasiness in having to uncover it and work thru it

Hi elias (is that Greek btw? curious . .). What you said about 'churning up issues', yes, that's a big part of the uneasiness involved, cause other times it's better to let them sink, other times better to have your accounts clear . . I tend to think that this line is about the latter after all

Pocossin, I love the idea of the landmark, what kind of writing on the walls have we left to go back to? Carrying muddy reflections weighs me down, like walking thru boglands -better leave less for memory to wash away

small anecdote: stole a couple of minutes during a free hour at work today to check for your answers since I was alone at the computer room. Alone except for a sparrow that found some crubs to nimble on near the desk ;)
yup, not a muddy well any more!

thanks again :)
