Just wanted to ask your opinion on this: if the question is "what action do I need to take (if any) in order to fulfil material needs" -how would you read 48.6 as a response?

Either your material needs are already fulfilled or they are there for the taking. IOW just go and draw the water the lid is off ? There isn't anything to stop you taking what you want.

Also i read here someones interpretation was leaving the lid off was a bad idea since it was then open to all so that could mean preserving resources.....Ah just checked it out its the Sorrels who say "The well has been left uncovered. Leaving the cover off the well is a careless act. You may be acting too freely with your self or your resources.."
I think thats a fairly unusual way of seeing 48.6 though. I think the first meaning i gave is more accepted.

In terms of fulfilling material needs, Id say the 48.6 could say that you have a great deal to offer and to make it available .

It could also be giving you a valuable image to meditate on: the image of the well with no cover........the fountainhead of flow is available freely .

Yes, the Sorrells do put a negative slant on this line, but it's the only one I have ever seen too. BUt I did tell the story once of a woman who was offered a sugar daddy relationship with a married man, and got 48.6 as her reply to whether she should take it. In that sense , the Sorrells advice seemed worthy.

One last thought I had was that of spending too freely on non-essentials. Put a lid on it and you will have quite enough to draw from for what you need. The only reason I mention this is because recently I had to make a decision about taking money out of an account for material needs down the road. If i had gotten 48.6 , I might have wondered if I needed to put the lid on that well, rather than lose the money prematurely.

But if i had asked your question, and the 48.6 came up, I might have read it as: you've got resources(in the bank), use them.

You have not confused me.... thank you for your response! I've been pondering on this reading, and thinking on Trojan and Willowfox responses, and what you say started to resonate more clearly. Thank you again!

It could also mean that you should be act responsibly and not through things around only because the well is full and you can fetch from it freely doesn't mean that you are going to waste things.
