My memoir Foreign Flavours maps my years as a celebrated model and icon of the Eighties here in Bangalore. It tells the stories of three of my white boyfriends and how in the end, the suicide of my sister over unrequited love wakes me up to the bitter truth of of the transience of romantic relationships. I determine to find a love which is endless and does not have a face. The book has a flattering Foreword from the Fashion Guru of India and I'm about to have it sent to the famous Shobha De who placed me on the cover of her magazine 'Celebrity'. She will hopefully give a quote I can use with publishers. It would seem that my memoir could be a hit but when I asked the Yi regarding the chances of its success, I got hexagram 48 with lines 1 and 2 moving and resulting in 63. I'm puzzled. Is the Yi saying that I'm not using my talent in a worthwhile way or am I being told to go ahead with it? Thank you for your guidance!

Hi AnitaS
It sounds like there are many cultural and personal sadnesses and revelations in your memoir and you speak passionately about it in your post.

Hex 48 meaning 'deeply connected'
Hex 63 meaning ' setting things right' or 'calm and settled'

Nuclear 38 - Opposition / Diversity

You have vested alot of your energy into the book and it has significant meaning for you (48) as it has already allowed you to put things in perspective and to make sense of some of the more complex parts of your life (63).

The chances of the book being successful? Hmmmm.... the question seems to hang on what it is you define as being a success. Is just writing about your life been the success in it's own way? In which case this could be the context of 63. Or are you looking at success as being money, wealth, fame or some other outcome that you value?

The reading is underpinned by the energies of Hex 38 where the 'ideal' solution comes with being able to harmonise and seperate. So there may be a challenge for you (or for the book) to be successful in discerning how to bridge or piece together all the aspects that you have covered in the book ( maybe another edit would help?) or even the hoops you will have to jump through to make it onto the bookselves in the stores.

48.1 - Is, maybe, suggesting that pinning your hopes on the success of this book at the moment may not be what is needed for you. There could be many things that will bog down its path to being published and by extension clog up your world.

48.2 - Deep down there is something alive and flowing in the book of your life but the waters are leaking away in this current venture.

Maybe, having received Hex 48 there is a guidance to not focus on making the book a success at the moment. Look for other fish to fry oand other ways to connect with the world around you. Other ventures or approaches that may be more fulfilling for you. Your life will carry on whatever you choose but some choices lead to muddy bottoms, coming up short or things leaking out everywhere.

....or it may mean nothing like this for you.

Good Luck

I think this answer is asking you to consider who your audience is ? For example 48.1 says no animals come to an old silted up well. Think about age groups for example. Younger people may not be interested and possibly those not engaged with the modelling world of the 80s may not gravitate towards it. So who is your buyer/customer/audience ?

48.2 often suggests wastage in some area. Perhaps this could all be a lot tighter and more focused ? It could also point to sharpening up distribution issues for the book ?

If we think about the well Yi says yes it's waters can be there to refresh and vitalise but cautions what happens if the rope is too short to draw the water up or the bucket is leaking.

In line 1 here this well is not really usable. In line 2 there may be gains but they are a bit random or not as much as they could be.

I think the 63 somehow finalises this as in you have gone as far as you can go with it.

I wouldn't say it was going to be a 'hit' based on this reading. But of course writing a book has value far beyond how 'successful' it is.

In your shoes I'd be checking very much where this book was distributed to. I'm thinking about the caution of the rope being too short to get water. This could mean not distributing copies far enough or not distributing them to the right places. I don't know much about publishing so I don't know how it works but I think the reading may call for more involvement on your part in the distribution.

If it's ready why not go ahead with it, I don't think there's any point in not going ahead, if you don't you'll never know. But I do think theres' things to do. To summarise

1. Re visit who this is aimed at, who is going to find it relevant.
2. Possibly think about the marketing and distribution companies you use
3. Take care to clearly market the target audience, I'd imagine this is quite a specific group.
4. Possibly (48.2) refine the book's central meaning/area. If it spreads out too much perhaps there can be a lack of focus.

Success of any book is relative. I shouldn't think any I Ching book, no matter how brilliant, will ever be a mega hit in the way that Harry Potter is for example because there simply isn't the audience.

And the audience or readership I think can be the Well here. Who do you see as your target readership ? I only read autobiographies of those I take some particular interest in. I'd read the memoir of a musician if I'm a fan. Having said that memoirs of just ordinary people or people with unusual lives can also be fascinating.

Don't be discouraged, put it out there now it's written but be aware of the reality of readership/distribution and all that.

Thank you Trojina. Yes I think since it is ready I may as well find a publisher or publish it myself. I know it will help people who spend a major part of their lives looking for the perfect mate. Because in the end I realise all is transient.

I think you're so right Trojina about distribution. I have an audiobook publisher Findaway Voices who has published some of my work. They have the best network. Some 50 or so retailers online including libraries . A library in France picked up my historical fiction novella. So I asked the Yi about publishing it as an audiobook and got hexagram 15 to 58. I have started recording. Thank you for alerting me to this. BEST!
