Happy Sunday everyone,

This is a pretty complicated time in my life, with tough decisions to make, & sometimes I feel like I am stuck balancing on a fence.

As I was trying to meditate on what could be contributing to this feeling of "stuck", and remembering a conversation (intellectual, not personal) discussion I'd had years ago with a friend on beliefs and values (context: neuroscience), I asked the Yi:

How am I bound by my beliefs and values?

And received 48 unchanging.

Ordinarily, I'd take that pretty positively as indeed, that solid "inner core" is what I have carried with me, wherever I went and whatever life tossed out at me. Yet this time, because of the wording of my question, I'm wondering whether there are now some beliefs or values that perhaps might be outdated or no longer being helpful.

I'd appreciate your thoughts! :bows:

you asked how you are bound by your beliefs, not whether they are detrimental, but was that what you had been thinking?

I must confess I find unchanging hexagrams to be a bit tricky, usually I tend to see them as a very broad brush stroke describing the situation and 48 for a question about beliefs and attitudes is a very good one however there is something in the commentary that is bound to resonate with you, perhaps the cooperative nature of the hexagram - being of use to the community or the braking of bucket and rope - the tools with which you interact with the world.

It is probably always a good idea to examine our beliefs and attitudes at the regular intervals and discard those that no longer serve the purpose. Otherwise, like the well which is not tended, mud, debris etc will accumulate, breaks will let shrimps escape and/or we will become unable to draw on our rich resources if the rope had worn down and broken, dropping the bucket into the mud below.

So if you are feeling 'stuck', like perhaps a bucket that has landed into the silt at the bottom of an unclean well - you know what you need to do. But if you feel that your well is clean and fully operational, then I really cannot fathom why you would feel stuck or indeed how 48 addresses your query.

Good point, Precisiongrace. I had meant "bound" indeed as "limited by", some sort of constraint that one carries (whether it be from childhood upbringing etc) that may no longer be as appropriate or useful.

I do feel "stuck", but am not clear on where that feeling comes from - which is why I asked the question, to gauge whether it is a values/beliefs issue or not.

You can't wander too far from them. If you want to be unbound you need wells and oases all over the place.

I couldn't agree with you more, Bradford! I like my well, tend to it as best I can and I think it is in pretty good shape :) That's why I was a bit perplex at the Yi's answer. Maybe it's a grammar thing , with the phrase to the Yi being "bound to" as opposed to the question "bound by"??

flashlight, I think you might want to ask (yourself) which of your beliefs and attitudes no longer serve your best interests, because we are all bound by our beliefs and attitudes, that's just the generic make up of humans
