Consulting the Oracle yesterday I asked about "the one thing I have to do" to achieve an important goal in my personal life. My answer was 5 transforming to 16. The extraordinary thing, however, was that I got 5 transforming lines: initial 9, 9 at 2nd, 9 at 3rd, 6 at 4th and 9 at 5th. I have only one book, Karcher's How to Use the I Ching. I would appreciate help in interpreting my reading since I have never seen such a large number or transforming lines.

When you get this many lines, it does become very difficult. For the quickest answer, I would look at the sixth line, the one that is not changing. However, with all those lines both the primary hexagram as a whole, and the relating hexagram become very important. Hexagram 5 has to do with nourishing ourselves in times of trouble, or in other words, taking care of our needs as if we are not in a time of trouble, joyfully, and enthusiastically, and hexagram 16 intensifies that with a meaning of enthusiasm. 16 has a lot to do with gathering friends together and working on a common project. This may or may not help, but line 6 says, in the time of deepest difficulty, help comes. Since that is the overall meaning although in slightly different contexts of both hexagrams, this is a lot, I think, of what it is trying to tell you.

Raquel,
Also look at line 1 of Hexagram 6 as well as line 6 of your relating hexagram. Marshall says that when more than three lines change, look at the lowest of the lines in the related hex that does not come from a change in the primary hex. In this case it's line 6.

Best for your Quest

Anita and Gene,

Thank you for your suggestions.

Do you think the way I asked the question, in a way almost challanging "the one think I have to do", and the complexity of the answer may be the Oracle telling me that there are many things I need to consider in the situation?

Somewhere I read that I follow up/clarification question is appropriate in some cases. This might be one of them, I guess.

I don't know. I think it is fine to ask followup questions as long as the original answer has been completely digested. It is all too easy to say, I don't understand the answer so I will just ask again. For now, it might be best to keep digging for "hidden nuggets."

It makes sense Gene. And there are quite a bit of nuggets here.

Actually, I have never used clarification questions. My answers have been incredibly clear and right to the point in this +/- 3 years I have been using I Ching.

Thanks again for you suggestions.
