Hello everyone,

I asked what the outlook was for attending for a graduate program at a university next year and received the reading in the title. This university is in another country, America, and is very "prestigious." I put that in quotation marks, because I'm not really interested in its prestige, as much as a place that I would feel comfortable at. Often high-ranked places are rife with tension, big egos and politicking. Of course, there are also many benefits too. Is 40 telling me that I can get let go of the tension about it?

I wouldn't have thought of applying to this place, but I visited a professor in America this week who strongly suggested that I apply there.

I realize there is another Shared Reading of the same sequence, but I thought I would ask all the same. I realize that 50.3 is mildly negative and 50.6 very positive, but I'm wondering about Deliverance. I often get Deliverance, and find that "the southwest furthers" can be taken literally. However, in this case the university is in the south-east! Am I being too literal-minded here? Also, I think I understand the general outlines of 40, but does anyone have an idea about the "pardoning of mistakes." Could it mean I pardon my own (thinking this place is a little too grand for me or that I am not adequately prepared for it?)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you for considering this request.

Yours,P

Hi Petrella,

It looks from here as though the Yi affirms (or reflects?) your less positive thoughts about attending the school. You would feel initially out of place, your lifestyle would be altered, and thus you may not feel like you belong there (Is this a current condition or a future prediction? Your question wasn't clear). However, on the plus side, you stand to gain a good deal of refinement from this school.

I interpret 40 as releasing the pressure, gaining a clear outlook, and moving forward with whatever you choose to do.

Hi Petrella

I pretty much agree with Meng here although I would say that the "rich fat of the pheasant" going unappreciated is only a temporary situation. So you might feel unappreciated or you might not appreciate all they have to offer but that will change.

On a non-ching level - I also went to a "prestigious" university pretty much in innocence - I had no idea about these things because I had not had anything to do with education. In retrospect I am amazed they took me. It was an incredible experience because the quality of teaching and research was fantastic and my fellow students were very focused on their projects. It pushed me to aim higher than I would have elsewhere. It was a very dynamic and interesting place to be and I soon got over the shock of being "different". I might add that it also makes my CV stand out whenever I apply for a job.

Hilary says about Hex 40 that the 'southwest' is about connecting with yourself because if you know where you are coming from it is easier to know clearly where you are going. She says if you have a purpose "start your journey as soon as you can".

good luck

Thank you Meng and Lucia for your quick responses. Meng, I should clarify: this is a question about applying to a university next year. I had asked the I Ching what the outlook was if I went there. In one way, it's not that crucial: I can apply and, whether they accept me or not, I can always take it from there. That's to say that if they accept me, I can still decide whether to go there or not. And if they don't, well, then I won't have to worry about it!

As I read over my question to all of you, I realize it sounded a little more tentative than I actually feel. I'm quite happy attending my current university. However, there are some difficult people there. I'm also aware that if you do go to a highly ranked place, it's much easier to get a job. Not that I'm a mercenary, but one wants to put one's best foot forward...

I spoke to another I Ching devotee and he pointed out that 50.3 actually ends up all right in the end. So I think I'll go ahead with the application (which is very long and tedious; hence my hesitation!).
