Could someone please help me interpret 50/Caldron with 2,3,4,5 changing to 20/Contemplation?

My question to I Ching was:

What is my relationship to this man and how can get peace about it? (I asked how can get peace because he is not receptive to helping me find peace!)

Any wisdom or insight from the wise will be greatly appreciated.

50. Ting / The Caldron

The Caldron. Supreme good fortune.
Success.

The Image

Fire over wood:
The image of The Caldron.
Thus the superior man consolidates his fate
By making his position correct.

The Lines

Change in the second place means:
There is food in the ting.
My comrades are envious,
But they cannot harm me.
Good fortune.

Change in the third place means:
The handle of the ting is altered.
One is impeded in his way of life.
The fat of the pheasant is not eaten.
Once rain falls, remorse is spent.
Good fortune comes in the end.

Change in the fourth place means:
The legs of the ting are broken.
The prince's meal is spilled
And his person is soiled.
Misfortune.

Change in the fifth place means:
The ting has yellow handles, golden carrying rings.
Perseverance furthers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
20. Kuan / Contemplation (View)
The Judgement
Contemplation. The ablution has been made,
But not yet the offering.
Full of trust they look up to him.
The Image
The wind blows over the earth:
The image of Contemplation.
Thus the kings of old visited the regions of the world,
Contemplated the people,
And gave them instruction.
I'm going to attempt to do my own reading for this by learning with the Yi software Hilary recommended on this site. I purchased it last night and there's a lot to read and learn.
What I really want is to learn I ching and do my own readings.
Bye for now.
Hello Alisa,
I hope you are enjoying the San Shan software as much as I do! I could spend hours looking up the characters at zhongwen.com - maybe not always 100% reliable, but fascinating all the same.
I hope you?re still in the market for a few ideas on 50 and 20, even after a few days? hiatus? Perhaps it would be better for me to post what I?ve thought of so far rather than waiting for it all to come together.
Hexagram 50 suggests that the whole situation is a crucible for change, something that contains transformation, opens the connection to the spirits, and thus founds a whole new way of being. (In other words, it is a big hexagram!)
Hexagram 20 suggests your approach to this: one of standing back, poised and quiet and clear-sighted, but not yet getting involved with the ceremony that will change things. Usually a positive hexagram, I think this might create some tension if the situation now requires transformation.
Four changing lines? one at a time?
Line 2 sounds remarkably harsh at first: you have something of real substance in the Vessel, your friend/s are in trouble but cannot approach it. Good fortune?? I?ve known this to apply to a situation where I couldn?t help someone I wanted to, which made it all the more perplexing. But regardless of what you want to do, the fact is that your own changes are underway, and other people?s negative emotions and neediness cannot touch the real substance of things. I think this could be a foundation for understanding the other lines: your development is fundamentally independent from his.
Line 3 basically shows everything going wrong. The vessel is damaged so that you can?t ?get a handle on it?, you can?t make practical use of it and access its power to transform things. Your actions are obstructed, you go unnourished. But the rain - representing the release of tension, and especially forgiveness - washes away all obstructions. Bringing this to completion means good fortune.
Line 4 is the least favourable of all. If it does nothing else, the vessel has to nourish the prince, who represents an important part of the connection to the spirits. Instead the foundation gives way, the nourishment in the situation is wasted and the prince who might have been the leading principle in founding the new order has ?his person soiled?. Those broken feet of the vessel - is there some basic responsibility you might be tempted to neglect? Something fundamental that needs attention?
(The purpose of this line is of course as a warning, to enable you to avoid this mess, not as some useless, carved-in-stone prophecy of doom.)
Line 5 is simply a very good one. This is a vessel of precious metal, showing that it is valued. There is ?harvest in constancy?, in carrying ideas through from divination (or other fundamental, spiritual perception) to practice.
That?s all I?ve come up with so far. I hope it harmonises well with your own thoughts.
Thank you, Hilary. I don't think I would have been able to put that together by myself at least not at the learning stage I'm in. The ideas are perrrfect.
Everything seems right on the money except for maybe moving line 4. Of course, I could be in denial about something...I'll have to give what that moving line says more thought(?).
Yes, the situation does warrant transformation, but I'm not sure if I Ching means, mine, his or both. And, you're right, I can't help him, but think I did do him some service despite that when our paths crossed last week. Almost no words were exchanged, but his body language, an open book -- interesting to say the least.
I may have some questions later.
Yes, there is room for change in my life, but as far as a "whole new way of being"?? A whole new way of being for me would be one where my life is shared with someone. Anything less than that would not mean change for me. I can definitely see myself transforming over a period of many years, but I'm sort of ready for change now...something more meaningful than a change of residence or job.
Any ideas about Hexagam 50 anyone?
