51. CHEN / THE AROUSING (SHOCK, THUNDER)
__ __
__ __ above CHEN THE AROUSING, THUNDER
_____
__ __
__ __ below CHEN THE AROUSING, THUNDER
_____

The hexagram Chen represents the eldest son, who seizes rule with energy and power, A yang line develops below two yin lines and presses upward forcibly. This movement is so violent that it arouses terror. It is symbolized by thunder, which bursts forth from the earth and by its shock causes fear and trembling.

Oops! I accidentally put this in Hex 50 instead of 51! But I will say again Happy New Year to Everyone!

What a radical change from the receptiveness of Hex 50. I’ve read that Chen represents the powers of the east…..creativity, illumination, birth, sunrise, new life, a higher frequency!

The eldest son taking power during this time would definitely create currents of energy rippling through the country’s evolution, and the towns, homes, businesses, families, lovers, friends, social interactions, etc. (a global transition for us all,,,the separating from 2008 to 2009 ?). If the eldest son’s intentions are honorable, authentic then the universe that watches will reward his every move. Could he also be revolting unconsciously from this immense power? But if his intensions are dishonorable then he too will suffer a shock that brings him to himself and hopefully wakes him up!

Shock in many ways could be seen as “something new”…..that at this moment our future is being seeded although it doesn’t appear that way right now. In fact this new speech is just a murmur, it doesn’t speak our language and at this time we don’t have a clear understanding of its message.

I looked at sparkhawk’s card and wondered myself if this awesome power is good or bad?!?!? It definitely reminds me of The Tower in the Tarot….its destructive force leads for a time to speechlessness and confusion. Similar to the tower of Babel (babble) where the destruction of its grandiose ness led to the loss of speech and people no longer understood each other anymore.

Could this be an “activation” or an “interruption” where we are bumped off course by circumstances beyond our control? Did this shock come because we were ignoring our deepest self as we plunged ourselves into the material world?

Do we want to break out from something that has been a burden or has the burden in turn uprooted us?

IMO, one of the first notions that must be discarded in the study and interpretation of the Yijing is that of "good vs bad." Destruction, although counterintuitive, isn't always "bad"...

In 51 you vomit out the ghastly mixture you consumed in 50...or is vomiting more 23 or even 18 ? No I really do think vomiting belongs with 51.... terrifying but you feel better after especially if you don't drop your bowl.

actually it leads me to wonder if the mixing and transforming in 50 always transmutes into something wholesome or palatable...if the ingredients are incompatible and so on.

vomiting is akin to a thunderstorm in my experience....relief..oh but thats 40 ish...

The rulers of the hexagram Chen are the two light lines. But since it is implicit in the idea of the hexagram of SHOCK that the light element is moving upward from below, the fourth line is not regarded as a ruler, only the line at the beginning is so considered.

THE SEQUENCE
The custodians of the sacred vessels, the eldest son stands first. Hence there follows the hexagram of THE AROUSING. The Arousing means movement.

Miscellaneous Notes
The Arousing means beginning, arising.

This hexagram is one of the eight in which the primary trigram is doubled, It is formed by doubling of the trigram Chen, which symbolizes the eldest son, the beginning of things in the east - the spring. This is also suggested by the Image, which shows the upward movement of electricity, thunder, making itself heard again in the spring.

Thoughts..

50. Heaven. Supreme good fortune. Success. The highest frequency, state of consciousness one can achieve before losing the sense of individual self within Group Consciousness and losing consciousness completely and falling asleep.

In order to handle this highest vibration, Heaven, the superior man strives to live in harmony with it even while on a lower vibration, physical earth. Thus, strives to live on earth as it is in heaven.
Thus I see the image, "The superior man consolidates his fate by making his position correct," as meaning that as it is man's fate to die, and he knows he wants to be able to maintain his consciousness even without a physical body, he strives to make his position correct while on earth, that is, he strives to live in harmony with the laws of Heaven (live "as if" we are all One, even when one doesn't necessarily see it) and thus even without a body, or beyond the borders of his body, he is conscious.

The lines of 50 then make sense if you read them as describing Group energy circling round, maybe literally all the sperm flying off in formation - think 1.5 - in search of The Egg. Suddenly one of them finds it, and wham, or SHOCK, fusion, hexagram 51. Something New, Eldest Son is conceived.

Hi Everyone
Happy New Year to you all

 What do you mean for "attempted"? That was our best shot! Dobro is my Costello, my Laurel, my Harpo...

Luis - Sorry I missed this in the last thread. Just like Rosada I've never seen you look so shocked. It looks like your comedy partner has deserted you of late. Obviuosly the scripts were getting too complicated to follow.

Sparhawk:Watch this Dobro and you'll get a fertlising shock - None of the maths you was taught at school was right.http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7WMi5TUJDso&NR=1:mischief:

Dobro: Wow !!That's another fine mess you've gotten me into, Sparhawk. My world is falling apart. I see things so differently now.:duh::confused::D

Harpo: I've got nothing at all to to say on this!!! :bag:

This is all a bit 51 ish... a bit like like Marcel Marceau having the only speaking part in "Silent Movie".
Mike

PS: I have a sideline in writing pantomime scripts but the business is not doing so well at the moment. Any thoughts why?

"Could 51. The Arousing mean the eldest son being conceived?"

I'll wait for Charly's contribution but on a very pretty point and click ching in chinese/english/french
http://www.afpc.asso.fr/wengu/wg/wengu.php?l=Yijing&no=51
it offers "loss by death" "mourning" "funeral"(although I'm aware these things are contentious)

but for me there is no doubt that 51 can be as much about "arousing" as shocking!
And of course sex/death = orgasm no?

THE JUDGEMENT

SHOCK brings success.
Shock comes - oh, oh!
Laughing words - ha! ha!
The shock terrifies for a hundred miles,
And he does not let fall the sacrificial spoon and chalice.

The shock that comes from the manifestation of God within the depths of the earth makes man afraid, but this fear of God is good, for joy and merriment can follow upon it.

When a man has learned within his heart what fear and trembling mean, he is safe guarded against any terror produced by outside influences. Let the thunder roll and spread terror a hundred miles around: he remains so composed and reverent in spirit the sacrificial rite is not interrupted. This is the spirit that must animate leaders and rulers of men - a profound inner seriousness from which all outer terrors glance off harmlessly.

Yes as many have said before and the shared readings area will testify 51 has sooo much to do with excitement, particulary sexual tension, between people its as much to do with arousal as with shock. Well I guess arousal and shock can be said to run along the same continuum except one is much more pleasant. I think this song has been quoted many times re 51 ...being 'in love' seems oft experienced as 51

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJ0K_DC9rUg

Elvis eh..now theres an older son..I see him more as doing the begetting than being the begotten. Eldest sons are devils aren't they ? You know that tower in Luis picture is a tad on the phallic side...but a broken phallus ? No !

51 is a sexy hexagram...Charly will have a field day..

Yep getting rid of crap always feels good

Gui Eliminating 43.Would be akin to taking a dump as far as I'm concerned. It's inner meaning is falling away.
Wilhelm uses breakthrough and Blofeld resolution but Huang follows the sequence of the gua

"Chen or zhen was related to the third solar term called the waking of the insects, wich takes place on the 6th day of the 3 month of the Chinese lunar calender.During this period, thunder roars. The thunder proclaims that spring is arriving. All hibernating insects and animals awaken and tiny spouts emerge.Peasents and farmers prepare to plant crops."Huang

COMMENTARY ON THE DECISION
"Shock brings success. Shock comes - oh, oh!" Fear brings good fortune.
"Laughing words - ha, ha!" Afterward one has a rule.
"The shock terrifies for a hundred miles." If one causes fear far and wide and has concern for what is near by, one may come forth and protect the temple of the ancestors and the altar of the earth, and be the leader of the sacrifice.

Let's save this for when we get there I don't want to derail the thread

I just want to post (seeing as we are on 51) for the record that I just asked:

what next for the people of Gaza?
51.4 > 24 shock is mired - clearly not going to end for a while

Like I said this is for the record.... lets talk about it when we get to line 4

"Shock comes - oh, oh": the exclamatory words mean first a frightened tiger, then a lizard running in fright hither and thither on the wall. Thus the meaning of fear become attached to the two onomatopoeic characters. The fear thus aroused makes one cautious and caution brings good fortune. "Laughing words - ha,ha": the words are suggested by the sound of thunder, which sounds like "ha, ha." They are a symbol of inner calm in the midst of the storm of outer movement.

It seems to me that after the experience of The Caldron where all perspectives are made accessible to everyone - each individual point of view is thrown into the pot - we now have the experience where everything is coming at us without any sense of time or order. :eek:Shock!
For example, right here in this thread we have the post of 51.4 with the comment that while it may be appear to be coming out of order, a hexagram for the Future, still Lucia had a strong feeling to post it Now. On another thread ravenstar has resurrected hexagram 59. a future thread from the past giving info we're reading now.

Anyway, it all just seems significant. And who is to sort it all out? What is future, what is past? The eldest son....

"The shock terrifies for a hundred miles": this is the sound of thunder, which is at the same time the symbol of a mighty ruler suggested by the idea of the eldest son) who knows how to make himself respected by all those about him, yet is careful and exact in the smallest detail. The concluding sentence also refers to this. The lord of the sacrifices is at the same time the lord of the house or of the relm, In this regard also the eldest son has his special task. The trigram Chen means the coming forth of God in the spring and also the reawakening of the life force, which stirs again from below.

This quote and what rosada said here

AND the Sabian symbol on LiSe’s web page
http://yijing.nl/i_ching/hex_49-64/hex_e_51.htm “A newly formed continent” had me scrambling to look for books (son's and mine) on astronomy and the planets. Before rosada had posted this, I’ll admit confusion reigned as to the understanding of 51. In fact it consumed me and I had to force myself to leave it and do other things as well as ongoing 'future' threads on Clarity.

I found it quite interesting how a continent is formed…in fact there are two theories of whether contraction or convection played the role.
(Also it was once taught that the earth and planets were torn out of the sun by a star that happened to pass nearby….this catastrophic theory doesn’t hold ground anymore as astronomers and geophysicists believe planet formation happens anyway near any young growing star).

The contraction theory points to primitive earth prior to three billion years ago where it supposedly had a thin, uniform cover of basaltic rock. Earth quakes were (are) quite frequent on earth and most of them are caused by movements of the crust (plates?) that suddenly break along ‘faults’ or lines of weakness. When they did break in the past, the vibrations shook parts of the earth violently, which was also felt on the other side of earth. It must have been quite a spectacular site to see…imagine the turmoil below as the iron descended, the surface heaved and bubbled over with volances exploding through it and lava flowing over parts of it.

In the aftermath, it is said the underlying mantle cooled, the surface shrank into the crack, since the inner part of earth maintained a constant temperature and volume. Through the cracks steam, gases and magma escaped forming the oceans, the atmosphere and the nuclei of the continents. Then erosion went to work. It washed rock fragments into thick beds of sediment along the margins of the original continents, and the pressure of these beds promoted further cracking offshore. The new fractures allowed more steam, gases and magma to flow from the earth’s interior, adding to the oceans and the atmosphere and causing the growth of mountain ranges along the edges of the continents.

I was shocked to read that the great continents drifted like logs in a pond and that many scholars actually scoffed at this idea for years but now there is evidence to support it.

Also when certain rocks are formed by settling cooling lava, magnetic particles in them make them behave like compass needles which tend to point north and south.

I also read that the mantle currents are still flowing and the continents ‘now’ are still drifting….some of them splitting up! Mexico’s peninsula of Lower California and part of the U.S. state of California are moving toward the Aleution Islands at the rate of two inches per year, breaking away from the famous San Andreas Fault that passes through San Fransisco. Another movement is separating Africa from Asia.

And, the Red Sea and the deep rift lakes of East Africa may grow in a few hundred million years into an ocean as wide as the Atlantic!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!!!
