52. Ken / Keeping Still, Mountain

-----
-- -- above, KEN KEEPING STILL, MOUNTAIN
-- --
-----
-- -- above, KEN KEEPING STILL, MOUNTAIN
-- --

The image of this hexagram is the mountain, the youngest son of heaven and earth. The male principle is at the top, because it strives upward by nature; the female principle is below, since the direction of its movement is downward. Thus there is rest because the movement has come to its normal end.
In its application to man,

the hexagram turns upon the problem of achieving a quiet heart.

It is very difficult to bring quiet to the heart. While Buddhism strives for rest through an ebbing away of all movement in nirvana, the Book of Changes holds that rest is merely a state of polarity that always posits movement as its complement. Possibly the words of the text embody directions for practice of yoga.

Yes Bruce very nice. Where is it that you have taken the picture?

Charly in Tibet and Nepal there are beautiful mountains yes.
I once made a trip there through the mountains. We walked for a whole month and saw many beautifull mountains and landscapes.

When I try to put a picture in how I do that? I always do this with a attachment but is it possible a picture of your own direct on the screen? Thanks.

Thanks! Sharp eye, Rodaki, to see the mountain cloud over the mountain. I took the shot along historic Route 66, just outside of Kingman, AZ. http://www.theroadwanderer.net/route66AZ.htm

Frank, the image must be hosted already on the net somewhere. This forum no longer supports images upload from your computer (bandwidth issue). Right click on the hosted image > Properties > rt click and copy the image > click the mountain landscape (ha!) image icon showing up on the Reply to Thread window, paste the jpg URL in there, and post it. Sounds more complicated than it is.

I use this for hosting/storage. Basic is free. http://photobucket.com

Oh, it's also easier to find the jpg url if you're using IE rather than Firefox.

I relate well to the family member aspect of trigrams, Ken being the youngest son. Odd to think of something so secure and ancient as a mountain being a youngest son. However, considering the other son elements, water and thunder, mountain is a relative newcomer to the scene.

Reliable, stubborn, secure, faithful, calm - Ken/Gen is a great brother to have when you need a broad shoulder to lean on. Sometimes awe inspiring. I think it's safe to say that Ken is the opposite of a flake, unlike Kan who is always going off the deep end, or Chen/Zhen, who is completely unpredictable. Ken is the go-to guy when you need a brother to count on. Just don't count on changing his mind.

I wonder how would that be interpreted in terms of astrology . . . too bad Martin stopped posting his astrological insights . . .

Very interesting photes and Luis' card ! Mountain above , mountain below.

Meng, I found the association you make about the Mountain as a person very interesting.
Maybe, since we have here double Ken, Its a opportunity to see how he relates with the other members of the family, or should be done in another thread ?

Hiya Maria

For some, it seems easier to relate to the human aspects of Yi images and symbols, while for me it is always easier to see it in the natural world. Guess in some ways I don't see humans as natural, and would rather trust what I see in nature. So for me, the family relations between trigrams makes it more human in a way I could understand it. But it's not limited to blood family only, because it deals outside the literal family as well, but still within the human family. It's also sorta fun to personify a mountain ;).

The best reference I know of for this angle on trigrams is found in Wilhelm 37, the entire commentary on the Judgment.

But aside from the formal references, it's easy to imagine how people of different stations and natures interact, and it's also easy to make the connection with those natures within trigrams. For example, how does wind relate to a lake? How does an older woman relate to a young girl? See the connection? The relational metaphors pan out sensibly and consistently through all 8 trigrams, and as they "stack up" in hexagrams.

Here also, strictly speaking, the two light lines are the rulers of the hexagram. But since the meaning of the hexagram of KEEPING STILL is based on the fact that the light element stands still, the third line does not count as a ruler, and only the line at the top so regarded.

THE SEQUENCE
Things cannot move continuously, one must make them stop. Hence there follows the hexagram of KEEPING STILL. KEEPING STILL means stopping.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
KEEPING STILL means stopping.

this hexagram is the inverse of the preceding one. It is formed by doubling of the trigram Ken, the youngest son, the mountain. The place of Ken is in the northeast, between K'an in the north and Chen in the east. It is the mysterious place where all things begin and end, where death and birth pass one into the other. The attribute of the hexagram is keeping still, because the strong lines, whose trend is upward, have attained their goal.

I'd go with Taurus, toss in a little Capricorn, with maybe a pinch of Sagittarius. :)

Yes, I see what you mean.

When we use expressions like “unmovable as a mountain’, “swift as a wind”, etc, we got a good picture of how a person is or behaves.

yes, Taurus was on my mind too . . ever tried to move a sitting cow/bull? Impossible!
Plus emotionally they are like huge rocks, it needs a looot of pushing to turn them around if needed . . (I should now!)
but why Sagittarius? hmmm . .

We need Martin. where is he ?
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaartin....
:)

Did you call me? :D

52 is very much Saturn or Capricorn in my (unpublished) book.
But as Saturn lighter, less heavy, than what astrologers tend to make of Saturn.

So I would agree with Meng, there is a touch of Sagittarius (or Jupiter) in it.

Hi, Frank:

Lucky you!

Here a picture of Prayer Flags hung by nomads to worship the Mountain God:

610x.jpg

http://www.jamd.com/image/g/74568693

The fact of worshipping mountains or rivers implies the deep believeing that they are living beings, say not only the whole humankind, the animals and plants are our relatives, but also the lands, the rocks, the winds or the clouds. All them our ancestors and our brothers.

Best wishes,

Charly

Well, what I see in hexagram 52 (and the mountain trigram) is mostly Saturn/Capricorn but in astrology Saturn is usually associated with responsibility, duty, "grey" reality, and so on.
And I don't see that so much in hexagram 52. It seems lighter somehow, in both meanings, less heavy and less dark. That reminds me of Jupiter/sagittarius, which is in many ways the opposite of Saturn/Capricorn.

As a personality type Saturn/Capricorn is careful, pessimistic, serious, responsible, formal, introverted, kind of grey. Jupiter/Sagittarius, on the other hand, is extravert, colorful, optimistic, likes to takes risk, tends to gamble, and so on.

If a Saturn says that the glass is half empty, a Jupiter will probably respond with "No no, on the contrary, it is half full!" :)
Saturn focuses on what is impossible, Jupiter on what is possible.

Not sure if Jupiter/Sagittarius is more independent. It may seem so, but Saturn/Capricorn is independent too, in a less obvious way. Outwardly adapting but inwardly ... alone towards the top!
But yes, there is more freedom in Jupiter/Sagittarius. The Saturn way is a narrow path. The Jupiter way is wide. Inclusive. Something like that.

I agree with marmaria and Martin on this, although I'm not too sure about Sag.

From the Mountain Astrologer on Saturn by Fern Feto Spring...

"Saturn conjunct your Sun can feel like being trapped under a heavy, immovable boulder. It's difficult to get any perspective when you're buried beneath a large rock......

Saturn slows me down to the speed of 'mountains', making me notice every detail, every small moment, and attuning me to the essence of what blocks me. Saturn demands that I work muscles even when they hurt---slowly, patiently building muscle mass, not giving up. Saturn wants us to continue to do the hard thing even when we see no visible results from our efforts."

When Saturn transits its natal place Saturn/Saturn we often find ourselves at a symbolic crossroad in life that requires some major adjustment or a critical time that challenges us to define the nature of our true inner self and to begin living that self as authentically as possible. It is a time of self-assessment and a time of self-reflecting all our past achievements and failures.....a time to look at any 'existing gaps' and voids in our life with great concentration and focus.

I do think it fits well with Saturn and with the great pictures sparhawk, meng and charly showed us. :bows:
