This combination has always puzzled me. I’ve received it numerous times although I don’t remember offhand all the examples.

What is puzzling about it is that 53 and 8 seem to make a lot of sense together. Seeking Union and the Gradual Progress of 53, their importance to relationship.

So why lines 3 and 6 that take us there? Line 3 bodes ill for relationship or for any endeavor really and Line 6 is often about something being over or passed, beyond the physical. Line 6 is a beautiful line and I think it makes sense here in that it’s sloooow and takes time (in my experience at least) but to me this is a really a tough one in choosing what to focus on or how to make sense of these two together.

This is an interesting query which I'd not really seen the true beauty of before. So, thanks for posting.
Here's my contribution to the thread.

53<>8
53 - meaning ' the marrying woman waits for the man's move'
8 - meaning 'delight'
53's Nuclear 64 - meaning 'exhausting the masculine will' with it's deeper challenge working away in the bowels of 53 calling for the superior person to carefully discriminate the nature of things and keep each of them in its proper position'.

In 53 the guidance of the image invites you to live a life of virtue and to slowly improve all that is vulgar in, around and about your world.

At line 3, representing the culmination of an inner rebalancing, the man departs and does not return. So, with the masculine element departed (his move made) new seeds can now be planted (the wife conceives) but are slow to come to fruition. Full feminine activity is not yet fully matured. No birth yet. For this to happen, the influence of the 'masculine will' has to become completely exhausted and this takes time. Eventually all the ducks become lined up, together, in the right direction (the deep urging of the 64 element) and the emphasis switches to the outer world.

At line 6, everything, and I mean everything, is engaging with the completion of the process. The process, because of all the inner work arranging the ducks, has gathered its own head of steam. There is no stopping it. (Question: Have you ever tried stopping a baby being born once its time to be born has arrived?) When all is properly being birthed you will just have to engage with the flow of events. There is nothing to do but ride the white swan and let things unfold. Nothing to do except watch the feathers dance their dance.

So, I would see it more like the man departing is a good thing and does not 'bode ill for relationship'. His departure is the catalyst. Beginning and then allowing of the new relationship to blossom. Similarly, I feel you are shooting wide of the mark when you say 'this is a really a tough one in choosing what to focus on'. The way to express relationship in a context of delight is, at 53.6, to not choose what relationship or aspect of relationship to focus on: that just breaks the magic (NB: The challenge held deep within 53 is not to pick and choose, as things can easily be displaced from their proper position through such interference). Dance your way slowly and gently to the centre of the web and then allow things to connect with, and relate to, you.

... as always it may mean nothing like this at all.

Good Luck

Alltogether, this combination looks also looks like an advice to take your time. The hexagram of 53 shows development. In the first two lines, in the beginning, there is a direction to go. The middle lines show transition, the upper lines fulfillment.

There is time in this reading. From the first line to the six line, something develops. The third line is a line which shows a vulnerable person. It is exposed. This is not a time to act, though, but to be very cautious and to protect the development happening. Maybe this is like a pregnancy in an early stage.

The sixth line is different and shows a development which is finished. Something has been fulfilled. Also, there is an orientation in this line. The wild geese gradually advance to the high plateau. They can oversee the landscape now, they have the full pictue. And we look up to the sky, see the geese and use their feathers.

The change pattern is 52 and 58, which might also tell a story. It is about stillness and opening. The focus is on reflection and calming (52), and then you can open up (58).

Alltogether, the meaning might be to give the situation a bit of time, to be cautious and to clear your mind, before you can oversee the situation. The 53.3 is a warning line, it is a reminder to remain true to what we are going for, and it also tells us not to accept people who are "outlaws", - I'd say: not trustworthy.

This combination is also one I know, I got it several times in a time of disorientation and crisis, when I was rather confused and didn't know how to proceed. Looking back now, I think that I was rather nervous and needed to be more patient, much more patient, in order to gain confidence, and the Yi told me.

It seems to me here that you do line 6 a disservice saying it 'shows a development which is finished'. I would tend to look at this line as a culmination that is a celebration, or recognition, of something 'more': something that is about to bear fruit from the new connections that have developed.

Stepping beyond 53.6 leads to an arrival in 54-land: a place which brings about change over which you have no control. This is where the fruit is delivered!

Whatever we may imagine is going on in 53, it is certainly not something that is finished in 53.6.

53.3 seems to make sense as part of it since it's about people not doing what they're supposed to do, and 8 has the warning about procrastination.

Hilary points out in WikiWing that both lines have the high plateau in common, and how this is not a very good place for geese.

Line 6 always seems a little melancholy to me. One reason is people see it about wills from time to time. Also because 53 is about the geese trying to find a home, and they do in line 5, but then they can't stay there, they have to move along in line 6. Maybe because geese are migratory, always on a journey to somewhere.

53 and 8 are both trying to get somewhere, actually. 8 is trying to get to the sea.

Also 53 is uphill, and 8 is downhill (at least with the geese and "rivulets getting to the sea" imagery).

53.3 is about the failure of the geese to flourish/thrive/live.
The husband dies on Expedition.
The wife doesn't raise children.
Robbers may get you.
Doom.

Makes sense with 53 + 8,
Because 8 has the implicit message:
Join soon, latercommer = doomed.
So, a Gradual Seeking union would be a slow one that is inherently advised against with 8.

53.6 is the earthly end of things
(Or the earthly marriage)
And the legacy left behind.

Ever try using the feathers of a living goose? Not possible.
Excepting the exfoliation treatment you'd receive from a living present, squirming goose.

They left the feathers behind.
The remnants may be used.

I didn’t know anyone had responded to this! Sorry for the slow reply back. I’m going to read these more thoroughly and think them through, thanks for commenting. I think I need to read the responses a little more carefully to totally understand them.
