hi everyone im kind of new to the I Ching, and I was wondering if I could get a little help with these readings. i asked two questions and i could use some help in interpreting the answers. first i asked "what if i dont give up on this?"(little project I've undertaken)and i got hexagram 53 with moving lines 1, 5 and 6, changing it to hexagram 36. the second question was "Does it look like I'm going to succeed with this?" which was answered with hexagram 15, moving lines 1 and 2 changing it to hexagram 11, one I'm usually happy to see might I add hehe

i'm sure there are people who have a better understanding of 53 than i but from my experience of it if i got this reading i would drop the project and look for a new direction or project to pursue, basically it is a project that would lead to some positive developments in the long term but i would be confident something more could be garnered elsewhere, 53 can be a very slow, difficult and trying process and the deprivartions suggested by lines 1 and 5 and borne out by the resulting 36 would suggest that it would take up too much of your energy and time to the extent that you would lose out in other areas of your life
15 1,2, to me say yes you will succeed if you devote yourself sincerely to it, that is, be modest, don't think in terms of praise, reward or success but devote yourself to doing whatever it is for the sake of doing it, that sort of attitude always leads to the inner peace of hex 11,
hope it helps,
paul

sorry, i did'nt finish, if the questions are in relation to the same project, then i still would'nt do it, 15 also speaks to me of lowering my expectations, very often no harm in that but 36 would still put me off, maybe some others have a different interpretation of 36 but i would be looking for a new direction, sorry, it's the way i see it,

again hope it helps,
paul

"first i asked "what if i dont give up on this?"(little project I've undertaken)and i got hexagram 53 with moving lines 1, 5 and 6, changing it to hexagram 36."

The Yi seems to be saying something like: "If you don't give up, progress in the project will be characterized by gradual advance, but you'll have to keep your head down and work behind the scenes to get things done."

"the second question was "Does it look like I'm going to succeed with this?" which was answered with hexagram 15, moving lines 1 and 2 changing it to hexagram 11"

You'll succeed if you take a modest approach with this (lines 1 and 2 are very auspicious, and being the two lowest lines in the hexagram, they sort of eptiomize modesty). Taking this approach will allow a very sweet situation to emerge. The modesty imaged here sort of echoes the keeping your head down imaged in the first response.

Good luck with it.

Hi Quale. I see it differently than Waveringdragon.

53 is the process of progression. You can use many images to imagine this. Wilhelm use the progress of a flock of geese. LiSe uses the image of a water wheel. The idea is the same: that of progress made through a continuous and steady effort.

The lines represent the stages of progress.

Line 1 (the first stage you will encounter with this ... whatever it is you?re undertaking), you are alone, inexperienced and subject to ridicule.

Line 5 You don?t realize success in this for quite awhile. Much labor goes into it before you reap a harvest. In the end, there is success.

Line 6 The endeavor reaches the highest level of reward, whatever that is to you.

36 suggests that you do this without much fanfare, without drawing attention to yourself.

Your second Q&A show [both] hexagrams where unity and cooperation is central.

These readings seem very favorable, and I?d take them as positive omens regarding your undertaking.

hmm...i see...so generally I could succeed, if I'm really serious and sincere about it and if I'm willing to donate plenty of time and effort to it, but as Waveringdragon said other benefits could be reaped by trying something different instead? I'd tend to agree with Bruce about Hex 53. I'd always interpreted it to mean slow and steady progress aswell, but.....I'll have to give this some thought.....
well thanx for the help everyone, I'm sure I'll work it out eventually!
