55. Feng / Abundance [Fullness]

__ __
__ __ above CHEN THE AROUSING, THUNDER
_____

_____
__ __ below LI THE CLINGING, FLAME
_____

Chen is movement;
Li is flame, whose attribute is clarity.

Clarity within, movement without - this produces greatness and abundance.

The hexagram pictures a period of advanced civilization.
However, the fact that development has reached a peak suggests that this extraordinary condition of abundance cannot be maintained permanently.

Beautiful Meng! I think there is something to the fact that we had 53. Gradual Progress which described one marriage ceremony, a very happy one, and then 54. which seemed to describe another, one that was not. Like the two sides of the same coin? And then we have 55. Abundance, everything out in the open. Maybe saying that a true marriage includes the good and the bad and the ugly?
I think the fact the moon was NEARLY full in 54. is significant. Like life -the sovereign I sets up situations but the missing piece, that which cannot be known, is what our reaction will be. Without that missing piece, our willing acceptance, then the whole show is a shame, 54.6. Like a father who arranges for his son to go to the best schools but the kid has the soul of wanderer and never uses his degree.
Hmm..I said never, but maybe 55. is about accepting, using what has been given. Maybe we're seeing here a lesson about blessings being available if you can accept them. Gonna post some more Wilhelm..

The ruler of the hexaram is the six in the fifth place. When it is said in the judgement, "The king attains abundance. Be not sad. Be like the sun at midday," the reference is to this line for this is the king's place. The line is yielding and in the center - the character of the sun at midday.

THE SEQUENCE
That which attains a place in which it is at home is sure to become great. Hence there follows the hexagram of ABUNDANCE, Abundance means greatness.

Miscellaneous Notes
ABUNDANCE MEANS MANY OCCASIONS.

I believe it is a seasonal celebration. Much has been written in historical context about 55. Mention of constellations and stars in 55 is a clue for the observation of seasons.

Thanks Luis,
There is a king on the left top side, so make me wonder if that card was something like a certain celebration

I'm wondering what this card is as compared to 50.
Seems like 50 represents a sort of primordial soup or unrealized potential, the gene pool, and then 55 is the actualized self.

I'm going out of town tomorrow and probably will not be back to post for a week.
Please go ahead and post the next paragraphs as you see fit.
Thank you so much,

This hexagram is composed of Chen, which strives upward, and Li, which also moves upward. The nuclear trigrams are Tui, the Joyous, the lake, and Sun, the Penetrating, the wind. Hence wind and water, and thunder and lightening, are together here and all this points to great power.

Something of a climax is indicated in that Chen, which is the more vigorous in movement, is above. While Shih Ho, BITING THROUGH (21) deals with the problem of surmounting a hindrance, here the hindrance is already surmounted. Still, greatness at a pinnacle suggests the danger of regression. The light is darkened in varying degree by the nuclear trigram Sun, wood, contained within the hexagram.

The hexagram is one of those referring to the mutability of all earthly things. This is most likely also the meaning of the saying, "ABUNDANCE means many occasions," that is, occasions for care and sorrow.

I've been looking forward to this one. I've always found it a tricky one to interpret, especially when it's unchanging. It's sometimes difficult to know when the Yi is saying do all you can, while you can as "greatness" will fade. Or the "sun" is so bright that you can't see clearly and in fact, it's already reached a peak. I've had both.

regarding the card posted by Luis, showing apparently a Mayan courtyard with Quezalcoatl masks etc., the translation says, on the left: "The image of fullness" (it's not a "king" but a feng (abundance) in simplified characters), and on the right: "The meaning is: while dwelling in security, think of danger"

Hi Scott! And welcome!

Interesting you see/interpret a Mayan courtyard and Quetzalcoatl masks. Never thought about it that way. I suppose seasonal celebrations, like harvest celebrations, are a universal theme and should apply to many cultures. I see silk dragons and masks, similar to the ones you would see in a Chinese New Year celebration.

I would love to know what you think of the other cards I posted, one for each hexagram.

Best,

Luis:

It reminds me that Wu Jing-Nuan told something about the building of a royal tower for seeing stars at midday.

The last cycle

When we have a closer look to 55 and numerology we see that with 55 the last loop is starting.
In numerology there is this constant loop starting with 1, to 3(1+2=3) to 6(1+2+3=6), to 1(1+2+3+4=10) again, then 6 (1+...5=15=6) and 3(1+....6=21=3), 1, to 9 again 9 and ending in 1, This is repeating itself over and over. The last cycle ended and started with 46 that was 1 and 53 and 54 were both 9. Here in 55 there is the end and the new start of the cycle again. (1 +2+3...55=1540= 1) This cycle will end in 64 that is the last 1.

It is interesting that there is only 3,6,9 and of course 1. As being 3,6,9 the triade, the trigrams, and also the numbers in the enneagram where the balans is found. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_Way_Enneagram)

Also the very famous inventor Tesla( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_Tesla ), once siad; If you understand the numbers 3,6 and 9 you understand the cosmos.

If I get your meaning, Dora, 55 can sometimes be too much? I agree with that. That's why my image for it is so extremely bright, almost annoying. 55 can be that way. Shade is a relief, even a life saver, not at all a hindrance. Ha, tax relief! :mischief:

ok, in a more serious note:

I didn't get much sleep last night and instead I roamed the internet for visuals on 55 . .
LiSe's 'cornucopia' brought to mind luxurious islamic setups (probably still in a 1000 and 1 nights mode), so I was looking for islamic decorations and came up with these (I'll just post links cause they're quite big)

this was small enough:
images

and this is a video I came across looking for the male equivalent of the vid I posted on 53, but watching it again I realized it might be really good for 55 (especially its ending). The singers keep one hand on one ear to be able to discern their inner voice (fire/clarity within?). They also often touch one another showing the solidarity of their creating act . .

oh, crossed posts!

yes, that, but reading on 55 I think it also about discernment, focus, discriminating devices . . and I did note that there is a need for being clear in 55 (shade the abundance of light, block out some of the greatness of sound)

it did remind me of 28 a bit, but I think one in 55 is way more capable of handling the excess information than one in 28 . .

The first one didn't open. Completely agree with the others as excellent 55 images. The vocal is stunning. hmh.. maybe stunning isn't a bad word for 55. "Causing great astonishment and consternation"

lol Charly! I think you get the award for the most inventive images here . . how do you come up with these things??
funny but in the first sketch I was seeing a guy with a pointy noise in profile, looking upwards . . but, oh well, I won't fight the writer over it!

hmmm . . this situation is seriously starting to look like a party
. . just as soon as mama-Rosada left the house . . tsk tsk tsk, typical!!
just as soon as I got all serious -you people are a bad influence :D
Trojan I'll get up and dance only if you will!
