Hi there,

Would it be wise for me to be a filmaker and go ahead and get this camera ?

58.2.4 to 3

I am at a point in my life where I am trying to find my true path. Filmaking is something I have explored, and am thinking to take the plunge in buying some expensive equipment to go deeper into this interest of mine and become professional.

My doubt is in whether this is the right pathway, as I have interest in a few fields.

So this question is to ask I chings advice on if taking the plunge in the filmaking direction, is the right choice for me.

I am feeling a few things from this reading.

58 bringing a feeling of expansion but also the sense of possible frivolousness which cause me to be cautionary.
3 combined with the lines possibly warning that a new direction needs some more consultation and I am possibly being self indulgent.
Line 4 speaks of an inferior and superior force and I am struggling to find in me what is what.
Yet hexagram 3 always feels so positive in my experience.

I am still a beginner in interpreting the Iching so help would be much appreciated,

Thankyou x🐥🐤🐣

It looks like the right time to buy the camera but possibly the wrong time to try to fix direction too firmly just yet (3)

And yet line 4 says there's relief in limiting the amount of time weighing things up, it drags you down a bit.

Many commentaries talk of 'inferior' and 'superior' pleasures but I think that's putting a slant on it that isn't there. All Hilary's translations says for example is

'Negotiating opening, not yet at rest.
Containing the affliction brings rejoicing.'

In my own experience I repeatedly find this line describes exactly that kind of 'haggling' in your mind. The word 'haggling' is in wiki with notes. It's that kind of anxiety of choice and it becomes almost painful and I think Yi is saying this is the affliction to be contained, don't let it go on and on, take it more lightly and there's rejoicing.

58.2.4 this is a joyous thing for you and as you said you are still exploring (3). Overall if it were my reading I would go ahead and buy the camera. I like the happy exploratory feel of the cast. There's nothing complex about line 2, genuine feelgood.

Yang pattern 40 aha you're coming to the question needing release of tension. Yin pattern 37, going towards what feels like home to you. This would be moving away from a kind of 'I don't care' to 'This is what I'm doing'.

I agree with some things you say here for example you do need helpers in 3 and that might just be Google or whatever you use to find the right camera. I can't really tell if the 3 here, taking it as where you are with this, is simply about the actual purchase or about your overall goal. It may be possibly about both.

With 3 it's important not to rush yourself into a set direction too early and yet several factors in the reading, line 4 and the yin pattern suggest actually it is time to sort of settle down with this.

It could just be 3 shows you're still open to new ideas, you're still investigating. I wouldn't say you were being warned, it's just where you are. This statement is really 3ish

My doubt is in whether this is the right pathway, as I have interest in a few fields.

That's you, that's the 3 the relating hexagram, where you're coming from. But there's joy and movement in the primary hexagram and also a need to put an end to deliberating over choices too much.

I heard someone say recently that the advice to do/go where your passion lies is far too heavy because we don't all feel that passion. What is better is to go where you feel inquisitive, follow what makes you inquisitive, what draws you to want to know more, there's generally joy to be found there. When you follow what rouses your curiosity time flies, you're absorbed, that's the feeling to follow. I think 58 describes that, the joy that sort of doubles when you are learning and sharing.

On balance I see this as yes go ahead, that's how the reading makes me feel. Let go of the anxiety about buying it, follow the wish to buy it and also be aware things might turn out differently to what you now envisage - but in a good way, you're still feeling your way into this and that's fine. I almost feel if you got the camera and didn't become 'a film maker' in the time scale you're thinking it would still be a good forward move. Of course if the price is crippling then it's a bit different, but I don't see warnings here I see joy in exploration and movement.

Hi Trojina

Thanks so much for taking the time to write your response.

Its an incredibly helpful interpretation as it feels that you really captured from the lines the pattern I so often get stuck in of deliberating endlessly and "haggling" yes.

It makes perfect sense what you have said and I can see how you deduced it from the hexagram. It does seem clear to contain the affliction of the indecision, and making heavy and weighted something which is my passion.

So 3 means a sort of undefined beginning full of possibility....I see. And also there it fits very well what you have said, because I am trying to pin it down in a way at the moment to justify buying the camera. Because I have interest in many areas in terms of film, documentary, experimental, music/video, art, journalism. And been trying to decide my definate route to take with the camera before buying it.

But i can feel now to drop that, and to get the camera and still continue to playfully explore. And thats ok because yes I can afford it at the moment.

Thankyou Yi for telling me to lighten and get back to the joy! and thanks for reflecting that Trojina
