I asked the I Ching today what the best way to move forward in life would be.
The answer I got was hex 59, line 4 moving, resulting in 6.
Looks like I ve to change some things (if I didn't know that :)) but it's also vague in a way.
I checked the hexagram index page to see if people talked about their experience about 59 (4) here. There is not much about it.
I wonder if someone of you knows more about this line.
So if you think you ve something to say about it...don't hesitate.

Assuming that you are using the Wilhelm translation, the text for Hexagram 59 says Dispersion means scattering; communications; travel is hinted at; that you should embark upon a major undertaking (cross the great river); it says that you are able to hold together things not easily held together, and that you use religion to do this. Just how this relates to your personal life, I do not know. You will have to make that connection yourself.

Moving line 4 means a fresh start. You bring one phase of your life to an end, and begin another. Doing this results in supreme good fortune for you.

Hexagram 6 means Conflict. This hexagram is telling you that you are being obstructed, and that you need to bring something to a close. If you continue on in your current direction anyway, you will be sorry.

Basically, you are being told that you need to make some huge adjustment in your life. You need to find a new job or new career, or you need to do the same thing in regard to your family life, or you need to physically move from one place to another, or something major like that. You need to make a huge new start in some major area of your life. If you do, great good fortune awaits you. If you do not, you will suffer for it.

For me, 59.4 is the first formulation of Eclecticism as a philosophy, to pick and choose only the best from your sources, and leave the lower grade stuff behind. You can cover a lot more ground in life this way, while others are stuck having to learn entire disciplines just to get at a little good stuff. Thus you "scatter those groups" and take only their highest point and reaches, instead of getting scattered yourself. The danger is in skimming everything with too little depth, being a dilettante. As the Gua Ci says, not ordinary thinking.
This became a formal school later in the Han, called Za Jia, or the Miscellaneous School.

Dispersion means to learn to forgive so that the negative energy you have may disperse and positive energy enter into your body and soul. You are surrounded by conflict and do not know how to forgive:

1.. Forgiveness does not condone what happened to you
2. Forgiveness is a decision to heal and move one
3. Forgiveness does not happen over night. It a decision that works gradually in all your states of mind. Spiritual practice helps open your heart.
4. If what has happened to is especially awful, you need not have to embrace the person who did it, such as abuser, but not to forgive for ever gives the situation power over you.
5. Lift the winds and let them disperse these negative energies, embrace the joy of this.

Thinking about it, I can understand. Miscellaneous as in multifarious, or many sided.

Never knew there was actually a school for that. No, skimming doesn't cut it, you have to experience it not just study or skim each facet. Have to fully invest yourself in it, buy into it and believe it. Then you can move on.. while you still can.

Maybe a bit OT, but maybe not.

I watched an old Bruce Lee movie last week, Enter the Dragon. Hilarious, all the 70's funkadelic stuff! But I love the subtle lessons he'd slip into the script.

Lee wanted to impress a powerful man with his teaching style. He called a student over to him, and told the lad to kill him. The student balked at this, which earned him a hard slap on his head. Again, Lee ordered the lad to kill him, and the student poised to strike. This earned him another slap. "You must be filled with emotion!" Lee told him. Now kill me. The student's entire face and body became angry, and poised to kill his teacher - whereupon he received yet another slap. "I said you must be filled with emotion - not an emotion!"

Thanks for your reactions so far. The more I think about it, 59(4) tells me to change direction, but doesn't tell me where. It's up to me (with a little help of the I Ching I hope) to find out in which area a new, better direction will be good for me.

Hex 59.4 is saying that it is time to move out of your closed circle of family and friends, to drop your self interests and get involved in something bigger, your community, life, to blend in.

Hex 6 a conflict is a problem, so if you are having problems moving forward with your life, then you are in a conflict with yourself, and to resolve these inner conflicts you must get to the root of the problem. You must understand what your goals actually are otherwise you won't get anywhere, you must communicate and listen to others because their knowledge is invaluable, perhaps you will have to find a balance within yourself, what you can and cannot achieve. You must be realistic about your talents, this is advising you not to start any new projects or start any new undertakings, or make any major changes in your life because your inner conflict still needs to be resolved.

When you search in the hexagram index, then search for 59.4 , that is how it is usually spelled, and that will give most results.

Here is one interpretation......

59.4

Success depends on your ability to manifest your selflessness to the maximum-even breaking your ties to your group. For example, your service to people outside of your sphere of fellowship might cause your friends to accuse you of treason, or of being disloyal, and so on.

Well said and that was my first thought. Then it occurred that it might also mean ones 'family' or 'circle' of long-cherished beliefs, ideas, mind sets.

Something else to consider.

In WB, forgiveness is discussed specifically which is unusual. The line position, , tells me that your problem is with someone in your outer world-work or something of that nature.
