What on earth is this line about? I wasn't able to find much about it here and the commentaries leave me confused.

Or the hero who gives his/her life for their cause and highest ideal. Joan of Arc, for example.

In my experience 59.6 is the line for getting out of danger quickly, and it is a danger that is threatening you in a far-reaching way, or maybe it is threatening your loved ones and you.

THis line says, (to me) Act now and think about it later...just get out of there! (wherever that may be) and get as far as you can. NO one can blame you for running from this!

Those are two completely different interpretations. I don't know what to make of that.

My own take on it is...

It seems to be about staying emotionally uninvolved..."Dispersing one?s (hot)-blood(edness)" (Bradford).

The idea seems to be that one HAS the "hot blood" for something...but is dispersing it by staying uninvolved and out of trouble.

They?re not so different in principle. Leaving behind the habits of self, the pinching shoes, the old ways or the passions which do not serve to further ? in favor of freedom from self obsession.

Consider the fan yao, 29.6:

"Tied with cords and ropes. Shut in between dense thorns. Three years acquiring nothing. Pitfall." (LiSe)

What ties bind more than self interest?

I think hexagram 59 is one of those that can be experienced in very different ways. It simply describes how solid things become liquid, clouds are dispersed, everything becomes one stage more fluid, boundaries and definitions dissolve away.

We might experience that as 'stuff' dissolving away, leaving more space, clearer flow (between the spirits and the king in his temple), so we can see further than ever before. Or we might experience it as having whatever we thought we could hold onto melting away from our grasp, leaving us lost, drowning. A thin line between liberation and utter panic.

For yet another take on line 6... it was part of a reading I did to look at one of the more 'mythic moments' in Buffy. Yes, the Vampire Slayer, yes, I'm embarrassed, no, I may never live this down.

In the final episode of the final series, Willow releases the power of the slayer so that all the girls with the potential to become slayers, do so - simultaneously. I asked Yi about this act, what was going on here, and received 59 changing at lines 5 and 6 to hexagram 7.

Pieces of background you need (really, you do)...

1) This is not how things have been done before. The premise for the whole series is that there is one chosen Slayer, with the power to kill the demons etc. In primeval times a bunch of mages made it so. When she's killed, then one of those with the potential is 'called' and inherits the powers - and not until.

2) There's a need to change this now because the First Evil is about to invade earth and take over. Buffy needs to raise an army of slayers. Apocalypse, and all that. Buffy and co generally avert one of these per season.

3) The last one they had to avert was threatened by Willow herself, on a grief-stricken quest for revenge. Oh - Willow's a witch. But since then she's been understandably reluctant to do magic, in case she turns dark again.

Looking at the reading - the slayer powers and responsibilities were Dispersed into an Army. Line 5 - the dispersing of the king's granaries, aka the powers - is one half of the story. I think the other half, represented in line 6, has to be Willow's redemption. When she 'went evil' this was represented by her hair and eyes turning black. When she disperses the powers, she radiates white light. She's also dispersed the blood, put it as far away from her as may be, and emerged.

Posting this quick before I have time to think better of it...

That is really charming, Hilary.
And a great reading.

Somehow the image of Hilary absorbed in a Buffy the Vampire Slayer series strikes me as an anomaly. But then casting Yi for insight into the drama is not.
