The project I am doing has encountered corruption. I have no idea how to get rid and restore my original file again. I used to think MSWord has all the backup, but i guess it doesn't! So I have lost 4 pages of my project thesis.. with a deadline looming. What did the oracle suggest? Why is success assured, and how? I am in a rut, but no flying chicken dance because of sedatives. I will still reach the end, in my golden carriage, but in which way? I have only a few options, oe is to have an extension, because searching for software debuggers is a project in itself. I downloaded 3 and they all were useless :(.
What does the I Ching suggest in this case wja do you think?

thank you.

You've tried restoring the settings to a previous date before the corruption occured ? I tried this, very simple and it worked. Don't know if that relates to reading but reading suggests the solution to your problem is already within problem no need to hunt far for it, I sort of see it as a contained problem.
CNET forums is good BTW...lots of computer people with advice

Trojan, how do you set the date? I have been trying that from the damaged file but I cannot find it
@ myself. The good file and bad file are only about 2 hours difference but in the same day. I think I saved over the good file with the bad file. Did u mean system restore as in the whole system?

Thanks mazaru, the forum did help but I'm still stuck.:( I did download that software but it couldnt restore my file.

If you're using windows, you go from the Start menu:
All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Then you get the option "Restore my computer to an eariler time".
Then choose the date when your document was as you want it to be.
Good luck!

Thanks Diamanda. The last system restore checkpoint is after the time for the document. Do you think anything can be done to set an exact time for system restore?

for e.g checkpoint 14/11 9:23PM
checkpoint 15/11 3:58 PM
checkpoint 16/11 1:23 AM

my file is somewhere at 15/11 8:00PM

the corrupted file was saved at 15/11 11PM

:(

thanks for your help.

What the answer suggests is that even though you are really cheesed off, you are just going to have to grin and bear it, try and remain in a happy mood and don't let the problem get to you. Do the work and you will be fine.

Usually when you don't save the file and something nasty happens then whatever work you did just disappears into space.

Thanks willowfox. I guess I just have to rewrite, though I don't like doing that, but then who does? Lol.. I just hope I can have an extension from the intended because the technical problem was really not my fault :(

thank you everyone.

I wanted to call up microsoft as a last resort. I did my work, but would like to save that data I lost. it seems to be a problem with the temporary file. I asked, should I try to retrieve the data? 12.1.4.6>3. Seems to be the last straw. Does it mean no? The lines in 12 seem positive, but the line 3.6 seems like a disaster..
I juust asked a friend to help with it but unsucessfully. I am afraid I can't reproduce what was done before, as it was info from various sources.
Will it be successful? 52.3>53. it seems yes, but no hope on the horizon yet.

In anycase, if the data cannot be retrieved, I will really need an extension. 19.3.4>34. Geez, I am really apprehensive of not being granted one.

What do you guys think? in the meantime i will have to try not to worry about it.

HELLO PEOPLE!

I found the salvation to my troubles. After downloading 7 odd programs, without caring for viruses, I found one that found ALL saved files in my thumbdrive, even those I once deleted! The software is called RECUVA (free), and it recovered all the files miraculously (well maybe miraculously to a computer-greenhorn!) So I am sharing my joy here, as well as recommend this program.

What happened is, that I DID save all my copies, but my comp turned them to temp files, so they were missing! I don't have to care about corrupted files anymore; I have the good files, although I missed maybe 20-30 minds of work, better than 2 hours of work!

Thank you for all your help, I really wouldn't know about computer functions otherwise. And after trolling the forums, I will never allow this to happen again. I'll save for every 2 sentences, to save the work I will do later on for retrieval.

Much appreciated all

If the work is important, I not only save but make paper copies as well, in case my computer explodes or something stupid happens, like a virus getting in and shutting the system down.

I highly recommend that program (no, i'm not their saleswoman!) It recovered all my deleted files from my thumbdrive, even those I really hoped never surfaced again(now i know big brother is watching through technology no matter what!). I would say I learnt more about deleted MSWord files more than anything else, and what makes MSWord malfunction.. so, I have already asked for the extension, if anything, it will make up for the energy I spent trying out programs.

Thanks Mazaru and Trojan! You can't believe how many people lost their thesis or projects with this error. Willowfox, that is very good thinking. Concrete information is always better than "transient" information. But still saving electronically is much cheaper, especially with constant editing.

I am glad I got my work back too, because I think I will spend more time crying over what I have lost than rewriting. Bad habit of mine :(. I am glad only 5% of what I did was taken from me, and I really don't know where it is. Like a coin from the hole in my pocket. But then I should be thankful, and I am! I just hate to make excuses like my comp ate my project, which will sound awfully like an excuse to my advisor.

Thanks so much! I encountered a weedy who said he sent his corrupted file to be marked (had a HUGE chuckle over that one!), basically I wouldn't dare!

Thanks all xx
