I have already applied to a batch of institutions, but I saw one that is local, and is a phd program. I only have a bachelors, and I was thinking to apply to it, bypassing my masters.

I really am not sure if I am up to it, almost like a gamble. Because I am not sure if I want it, and it is a long process.

I got 64,1,2>21.

Can anyone help me decipher the meaning? I know line 1 says I will be wise to hold back (ie not apply). But line 2 shows an action taken, after the break. But when? Does it mean I should do my masters first before applying again?

I feel stuck in the middle of lost. I dont take things frivolously as I sound, but this is like grasping on a frayed string.

Aha, I knew this thread would come in handy http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/showthread.php?t=9109, you'll see here the usual meaning we take in 64.1 may not be quite right...see Lises comments on it.

My quick impression of the reading is thats theres lots of stuff to be resolved, as if nothings quite where it should be in order to move forward. To move forward you need to 'bite through' these obstacles which may take some time and patience..I'm thinking bureaucracy here being an impediment of some kind ?

Hmm I guess if you decide to do this you need to be determined but patient...I don't see it advising you against it or for it just showing where you are with it, doesn't look a straight forward path and of course another factor maybe you simply aren't ready (64) to take this course of action

However if i were you I would also ask about alternatives to compare with this answer

Seems to me 64.1.2 > 21 mirrors your description of the situation without telling you what action to take.
24. Biting Through.
This seems to refer to the requirement that you first have completed your Master's. This obstruction would need to be Bitten Through before you could be accepted by the Phd. program.
64.1... there is a temptation to advance oneself as rapidly as possible in order to accomplish something tangible. But this enthusiasm leads to failure and humiliation if the time for achievement has not yet arrived. (Wilhelm) Could be read as your enthusiasm to take the course being blocked if it's too soon - like you have to get your Master's first?
64.2... an individual must develop in himself the strength (get the Master's?) that will enable him to go forward.

Sounds to me like the I Ching is saying you wont be able to get into the program without a Master's, and that actually you need the experience and knowledge that comes with getting a Master before you can tackle and triumph a Phd.
However, many times when the I Ching so closely mirrors my estimation of my situation as this reading seems to mirror yours, I take that has a sign I should pause and consider whether these are my true sentiments.
Maybe the I Ching is saying your first step is Bite Through this obstacle your mind has created:
Perhaps you have given the Master's more power than it deserves. Perhaps you should call the school and talk to someone. Find out if they ever would consider taking a student who had only completed their Bachelor's. Knowing that could save you a whole lot of time and effort!
