Hi,

I've been researching my family tree for years, and a year ago, with my brother's help, took out a subscription on Ancestry to research it more fully. We've created a very expansive family tree, and through a DNA test I took, I was able to determine the birth parents of our paternal grandfather, as well as the parents of my father's grandfather. So big reveals all around, which we've shared with the rest of the family.

The subscription renewal is next month, and it's costly. My brother has suggested we ask the family for donations toward the cost, and then he & I split the remaining amount, which I think is a good idea, on the one hand, but am also sheepish about going cap-in-hand to the family. So I asked the Chi whether it would be a good idea to do this, and got 64.1.4 -> 41. I'm wondering whether the answer speaks to my fear of asking (64.4?) and not blundering in with the request (64.1?), and to swallow my pride (sacrifice) in asking. I wonder whether "Three years go round, and there are rewards in the great city" in 64.4 has to do with the ongoing research.

What do you think?

Best wishes,
Compass

41. Decrease your cost.
64.1 Don't jump in and sign up before discussing this with other family members.
64.4 May take a bit of talk but all works out well.

I think asking the family to chip in on this project is a very positive thing to do, not just to save you some bucks but it's also an opportunity to build family unity, to create a sense of family being a support group. I see 64 as referring to this being the time to discuss plans before moving forward and 41 as representing the idea that you can Decrease having to foot the entire bill yourself. I suggest you make the request as an invitation to strengthen the family ties by saying something like, "Hi Guys, It's that time of year again. If we want to know more about our family history we need to renew our subscription to Ancestry.com. I'm willing to do the actual research if folks are interested. The cost for renewal is $___ which averages out to about $___ for each of us. If that is too much for anyone but you'd still like to hear what we find out, let me know. Scholarships available!"

Thank you so much, Rosada. I sent out the request for donations from my family, and they responded positively. It was so lovely to see. Even my brother, who helps me with the research, won't let me pay and is covering the balance after everyone else has donated. It's lovely. Thank you again.:)
