Dear friend in Italy has sent me the translation of her manuscript and asked me to be sure it is in proper English before she sends it to her publisher. I'm retired now, but did work at publishing companies as an editor for many years and did freelance editing as well.

Friend is an MD, is writing on a medical topic for other physicians. Really, this is not the sort of book I do or ever did. I started working on it yesterday and find it difficult to stick with it. Have to look up many medical terms, cannot breeze through it. Not sure I can do the right thing for her work -- which is part of the basis of my question. I also wonder what feeling rather incompetent will do for my general wellbeing. IOW, how will I effect the book, and how will the work effect me

My question: What is the best thing to do about this manuscript? 64.2.3.6 > 62

LISE's version of the lines:

9 at 2: Dragging one's wheels. Determination auspicious.
Don't let anything make you move faster than your own pace, and move even a little bit slower. Your speed goes down, but your strength and oversight go up. Learn from your sewing machine: the low speed is the power speed.

Yes indeed, this will be a slow go. Hundreds of dense pages to examine in minute detail.

6 at 3: Not yet across, setting things right: pitfall. Harvest to wade across the big stream.
You can only cross the next river if the previous one has been mastered, so finish one thing before starting the next. Your mind should be able to focus, if it has to jump to and fro, nothing will be accomplished. And 'things' seem to have a mind of their own, they react to your lack of attention.

This says clearly that I need to finish this work and not give up on it. Considering telling friend that it's just too much for me and suggesting another editor. But that FEELS really awful. (Pride, ego?)

Above 9: To inspire confidence when drinking liquor. Without fault. Soaking one's head and inspiring confidence: losing it.
A free mind is not a loose mind, on the contrary. So think and talk with a balanced clear mind, that is the way to reach others in a positive way. Talk with a drunken head and nobody will follow you. It will turn against you and might even destroy you.

Yes indeed, this manuscript will drive me to drink. Vanilla vodka sounds good about now. Straight up.

I'm hoping for some objective, detached commentary before I tear all my hair out. Many thanks for your help.

I'll give it a try, in hopes to help save your hair. :D

You are here 64.2, great job, knowing when its time to put on the brakes

I'm thinking you probably shouldn't jump to here 64.6, there will be time for celebration later, put the vanilla vodka down. Though a sip might calm the nerves a bit.

Well we must learn to walk in the middle, at least that's what's been said. In the middle we find 64.3. I wonder what exactly this line means for you. What comes to mind is focus on the task at hand, not on the outcome. If you are finding it hard to focus, what has helped you focus in the past? Walking away for a little while? Meditation? Taking a walk? Having a sip of vanilla vodka

Where can you get help with this task? Have any doctor friends? Perhaps friends that speak fluent English and Italian? Seems like it could be someone or something that has helped you before. Then again, here you are at clarity...

May not be much help, but its the best I can give in this moment of time.

Best wishes on your journey, because it is the journey that matters...

With love,

Blue_angel

Hi poised, Probably a good idea to ask yourself why you're doing something you don't want to do. What if you say no, what will happen?

The other day I asked my friend to do something for me she said no - I laughed and laughed because she always says yes to people, then feels overwhelmed and recently I'd been saying to her you need to say no. I know she was a bit worried about saying no and that it may have changed our friendship but it doesn't - I'm proud of her for finally finding the courage to say NO! - Liss

Hi dear Poised,

I agree with Liss.

I think your heart is in it because it's something you know you're skilled in and because you want to lend yourself to help your friend, but that that's just not enough to do it with all your head.

I was recently asked by an old client and friend to help put together a marketing plan for his new business, and while I'd love to help him, and there's still a flicker of interest, even passion for what I used to do so easily and well, fact is, my intent isn't enough to do him or myself justice at this point. I've made myself available to bounce ideas off, to consult, but declined to pour myself into it as I once did. So I'll help in a 62 kind of way, but won't take up oars to put my back into to get his boat across the river. Neither my head nor heart are into it fully at this stage. We're still friends.

Yes, I will say no

Thanks, Liss. That's the nitty gritty.

Enough of putting myself down for not being superwoman. The sky WILL fall, but OK.

It's true, do you simply not want to edit it?

Boils down to that, blue_angel. Thanks for helping mr get to this point. I'm emailing my friend today with a few pages I did edit and info on where to find medical editors who can breeze right through this ms.

Head AND Heart say no

Thanks, sooo. Pretty well describes my situation. I actually never did copy editing, which is all my friend needs. Not my strong suit.

I was developmental editor/author schmoozer. I hire copy editors for my own writing. So the project just isn't a fit for me. But I did do almost a chapter for her to show her what she needs -- copy editing by someone accustomed to medical terms.

Lots of medical editors looking for work and there is a very good organization of pros where friend can get what she needs.

What a relief!!!

What is the best thing to do about this manuscript?

Oh is this simple! The best thing to do is for her to contact Steve Marshall. He is a pro at editing medical manuscripts. If he'll take the job, her worries are over. Hexagram 62 suggests that she will enjoy her just rewards.

Hey! IT-EN translator at your service

Hello poised

I was thinking about answering your question some days ago (in a divination-related way) but I see that the usual suspects are giving you great advice :)

I happen to be an IT to EN translator. My mother tongue is Italian but I have excellent command of the English language. (An English friend of mine once said "miraculous"). I have a good command of scientific terminology become my mother is a neurologist and I have to help her translate stuff from time to time.

I am a physical (and legal) person, exist in the real world, have a Linkedin page with recommendations and even a VAT number. I am Brussels-based.

Let me know how can I help you, send me a private message if you want! I will give you my details, rates etc.

Good luck and maybe see you soon!

This is the craziest place I have ever used to do business
