Hello, i just have a quick question: do lines 2 and 4 of hex 64 /resulting in hex 23/ together advise to move forward with a plan of an uncertain outcome?
If I understood it right, line 4 advises to go ahead but 2nd line speaks of wheel braking and pausing..but in order to return (quit), rethink, or refresh before continuing maybe?
Thank you, d.

64.2.4 > 23

Braking suggests that you carefully consider the risk of failure. Can you take the loss and hurt if your plan fails? But better to have risked and lost than never to have tried at all. So if you can get everything in place, the lines are positive.

Everything is bad enough as it is with no chance of getting much better anytime soon, so honestly, no idea.
Looking through Memorizing Threads and a few usual translations, could not get what is advised in 2nd line. The image of hitting the break when you furthered already would suggest a change of course or tactics...pulling back and taking the middle way there was also mentioned...I think that 64 is transitional, something needs to be done since something is missing.

Yes. 64 is "Before Completion" or "Not Yet Across". Some last step needs to be taken.

I have always had mixed feelings about line 4 and the "Demon territory". To me, this implies a struggle with some conflict - inner or outer.
Line 2: "He brakes his wheels" or "he drags his wheels". This may sometimes be viewed as deliberate breaking, or simply the difficulty of the struggle.

If one happens to enjoy using Berkers as much as I do, this may be illuminating::p:bows:

64. Not yet Across

Line 2:

Dragging his wheels.
Persistence brings good fortune.

It is not easy to go forth, one needs to drag to get through. By persisting things will go well.
(The wheels that are dragged are from a cart that is pulled across a river.)

Line 4:

Persistence brings good fortune,
aversion goes away.
Shock was used to attack the Ghost region.
The third year one was rewarded with a great country.

A firm and persistent approach improves the situation and makes things go well. One's initial aversion to the situation will go away. Working on this may take quite some time, but it leads to a long time advantage.

Hexagram is changing to:

23. Removal

Removal.
It is a disadvantage to have a goal to move to.

Removing something. Before this is done it is not practical to make plans.

p.s.I like Tuck Chang`s book also, he has a very clear way of explaining, IMO.

Hexagram 64 is about taking a risk. The little fox ventures on the ice (apparently), but the danger is that the ice will break and the fox fall in. Can you test the water before diving in head first? That is, can you do what you plan in a small way before trying it in a big way?

No, I can`t. I thought that the hex is only partially "about" the fox, as it is an illustration of sort, a Chinese sayin of a risky undertaking and all lines as I seem to recall, talk of doing something, but not overdoing it..but I am having a case of overly cold feet, numbing, I guess what has to be done, has to be done.
Thanks to both
