I was eating a piece of raw carrot and there was a loud crack, followed by a metallic taste and sharp pain.
I've just returned from the dentist and my tooth was cracked in half although how deep the dentist can't tell ( down to the root means the tooth is unsaveable). I decided, with the dentist's advice and explanation, to not get a root canal but just to clean and cap the tooth with a tooth shaped filling, saving the important tooth nerves on the good chance that the break didn't affect the nerve. If I wake up tomorrow in a lot of pain then the nerve is indeed ruined and I will need a root canal and crown. An expensive prospect, and losing the nerve means the tooth will be dead, lose its strength and perhaps cause more problems down the road.

As you might imagine I'm suffering from the pain of the cracked and throbbing tooth, lost sleep and great worry over the past few days while I waited to see my dentist, and fear. I'm a young woman. Young women should lose teeth :(

Is my tooth ok? 12.6 > 45

The shape of hexagram 12 looks like a tooth! The tooth is blocked (capped by the dentist' filling) and now... Hopefully, tomorrow there will be rejoicing.

You seem to have your own way to look at the reading, which is not the way I use, but I'm not going to say it's wrong, because if it works for you with your own intuition then it's obviously not wrong :)

Here's my interpretation, which is based more on the text itself.

When I get readings with only one line changing I pay attention mostly to that line. Here you have the top line of the Standstill / Stagnation hexagram, signalling the end of the difficult period that is the standstill.
To me this looks like good news.

On the other hand, the commentary says that this is not an automatic process but something that must be brought about by action and maintained. So looking at this I would say the final outcome will be good, but there might be a bit more work involved. Maybe it's just referring to you having to be a bit more careful with your tooth from now on or something similar. Either way, it is a good line, leading out of a bad state.

I hope it's good news for you in the morning!

Hi Kash, thank you for your reply.
From this comment you made I believe you assume I did not read the Judgement or commentary on the changing line, rather I just observed the shape of the hexagram. Please do not confuse my brevity with ignorance, rather when typing on a phone it is extraordinarily lengthy process and one that last night (while in pain) I did not have much energy for.

Hillary's commentary of 12.6 is

Nine at the top means:

Overturning the block.
Before, blocked. Afterwards, rejoicing.

My quick comment about how 12 looked like a tooth was more to share the literal visual experience of the hexagram: I find that sometimes the I ching can be wonderfully literal. Previously I lost a pair of earings, which I later found in the draw of my six draw dresser (the same draw that was indicated as a changing line in the hexagram).

There is a wonderful visual and literal understanding within the shape of 12 (and 45) that goes along with the commentary and text. The shape of 12 was my tooth, that was obstructed and that my best efforts could not cure it, I needed a dentist (indeed the filling that at caused the tooth to crack also was firmly lodged between the pieces - an obstruction). The tooth top was removed and blocked (capped) by a tooth-shaped filling (a literal line 6 at the top of the tooth). And then it was a wait and see that the nerve was not damaged.
Indeed while my new shaped tooth looks beautiful (my dentist did a wonderful job at making sure this looks like a real tooth that fits in my mouth - The Gathering, hexagram 45) it is shorter than my matching tooth on the other side as I have big teeth, which means lots of movement and bending in the teeth while eating: not good for these filling capped beauties that need to be careful not to bend and break. So yes, as you say there is a long-term guidance here: And I am putting away my vanity for the slightly different smile I have now for the long-term goal of having all my teeth, and all being healthy.

And indeed today I am rejoicing! I have no sharp pain only general soreness. I am still holding my breath a little, the last few days have been huge.

Thank you once again Kash for your kind wishes.

I'm happy things worked out. But please don't take what I said to mean I thought you were ignorant in any way. I meant what I said exactly as I said it. I don't use the I Ching in a very literal / visual way but I know many do. It's not something I can comment on or judge because it's not the way I personally use it. But we're dealing with divination here and that's as much of an individual process as it is the actual text or system. You got the answer you needed by looking at the hexagram *and* reading the commentaries so this is obviously the system that works for you. What I was trying to say was that you should keep using the I Ching in the way that works for you, not the opposite :)
