I am a relatively new student of the I Ching. My major divination speciality is Geomancy. However, I have made accurate predictions using the Plum Blossom method, which I think I can say is my preferred I Ching method as for now.

Can the I Ching be used to determine which year, or at least how many years, an event occurred in the past or will occur in the future? I've read a book on the Plum Blossom method that told me of this, based on I Ching and Chinese numerology-it stated each gua has meaning and a number date can be determined from them.

Is anyone here familiar with determining numbers and/or years from the I Ching? Is it even possible? If so, please tell me how I can do this.

Actually, I was totally unaware of this method. Thanks anyways! No, I was referring to the method developed by the Song dynasty scholar Shao Yong.

Hi,
I'm working more or less (1)on this topic ie Shao Yong. A member gave me a reference to books about Shao Yong: http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/showthread.php?23699-Shau-Yong-Translations
Btw I find the link Trojina gave very interesting and hope/waite for further translation of this spanish work. Only part of it has until now been translated into english as far I'm concerned..... (?)

----------------------
1) On the timely order in the linked paper above (Quote p. 27 & 29) the red underlined:
Concerning Shao Yong it's important for me to notice here that my only source as to this arrangements of the monthly order of the hexagrams I got from an I Ching forum (see note * on page 39 below). I've searched in books on the subject, especially on Shao Yong, without luck. But I will not exclude the possibility that my source is correct untill the contrary shows up.
*) On page 27, above, I start Spring with the second Lunar month ie hex. 34. There are different opinion from book to book about this... I've taken the freedom to fit in here what's, frankly, the most convenient. More over my first source for the Shao Yong-calendar-hexagram order I've taken from HERE. As more specific material occurs I'll have to make adjustments.

For time - systems like WWG/Liu Yao, we assign elements to the lines and we can see how with change of time the influences on the Hexagram will change. Though to be fair it's very powerful for the next few weeks to a month, but most people have problems using it for larger time spans, for that usually BaZi or purple star is used(Chinese Astrology)

For numbers I don't know - I guess Mei Hua may be more suited for that, I avoid Mei Hua, so can't say.

But you needs BaZi and some knowledge of the Chinese calendar to work with time in the five arts...
Unless you decide to use something like the Xuan Kong and just use year of birth and the 20 year periods... But that will be very limited to the predictions it can make.
Or hope you get hexagram showing specific branch, since most translations will give the month associated with it, although rarely will explain why.
