Have edited the "rules" again (still subject to change):

1. Pasting the plain text of an HTTP address (url) into Xenforo's edit box creates fancy links if (a) the linked-to webpage provides the metadata required for their creation (this is beyond our control as forum users), and (b) if we paste the address on a separate line. If a plain-text url is pasted on the same line as other typed text, it creates clickable urls.

An example using the same linked-to webpage:

Pasting the address on a separate line:
Pasting the address on the same line as other text: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_World_sparrow

2. Using the link thingee, a.k.a. toolbar button, creates clickable urls (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy), or clickable words in a sentence, and not fancy links, whether the link is placed on a line with other text, or on a separate line.

Re-stated a different way:

If you want a fancy link (dependent on the linked-to webpage supporting them):
  • Don't use the "Insert link" toolbar button.
  • Type manually, or paste with ctrl-v, the plain-text url on a line by itself.
If you want a simple clickable url, or clickable words in a sentence:
  • Use the "Insert link" toolbar button.
