A reading about my partner's smoking: 59.6 > 29

Let me preface this by mentioning my general inexperience with interpreting gua. I've only ever used "easy" I Ching translations in the past; that is, translations that interpret the meaning of the images and symbols for me. Now I'm going off Alfred Huang's translation, which translates the gua very literally and allows me to draw my own interpretations of the image and symbols. I'm feeling kind of lost!

I asked, "What do I need to know about my partner's smoking addiction?" I received hex 59.6 (Dispersing) > 29 (Darkness). I have to say there was very little in the translation that I found relevant to my question. Best that I could do as far as my own interpretation was, that smoking helps him disperse his worry and stress about being head of our household (wind over water), but that this method of coping will end up drowning him as wind changes to water. In a very literal sense, he will lose his ability to breathe.

I would love to hear any other insight you may have! My divination background is in Tarot, so making the mental adjustment to the I Ching system is a challenge. One I'm happy to take on, however!

Hey there.... I think you're not far off with your interpretation.

The first things that spring to mind is the reading mirrors your fear of drowning in the dispersing smoke as it builds up to "darkness" i.e. a black cloud.... line 6 is reflecting how you're dealing with the situation. "Tiptoeing around it."

But your question was "what do I need to know?".... well in short - this addiction is probably going to get worse if you don't take action now. That's my take on it.

I suppose the next question to ask the Yi is what I can do to help him. The measures I've tried thus far (without consulting any oracle for guidance) have resulted in resistance and anger.
