My questions to Yi lately have all been in thr form of "where do I put my energy in this situation?" or "what is most useful to focus on here?"

Some days ago I asked this about an upcoming job interview. I got

33.5 > 56
I have been thinking about this 'retreat' constantly and don't understand what it means. Is it saying to step back from it, refuse the interview or not accept the job? No point refusing an interview, even if just for practice. I'm not in a position to refuse the job, and Yi knows this. So how else can I withdraw? Not say much at the interview? -- but its an interview!

So I asked, what does it mean to retreat in this situation? I got

32.4 > 46
I read this as continuing as before, no big changes, and line 4 saying that I will not find what I am seeking and this is not an appropriate sitation.

I took all these readings to mean that this is not likely to work out, its better that i forget about it and continue as before, not expect this event to change anything.

Would you read this the same way?

Hi soma,

"where do I put my energy in this situation?" or "what is most useful to focus on here?" .... about an upcoming job interview..."
33.5 > 56

At first glance it would seem that it would say walk away, but I was reading the Wonderful Wikiwing (a jem that is offered to Circle Members) and I got a different feel from 33.5 than that.

It says:
33 zhi Hexagram 56, the Sojourner. The sojourner finds the right course to take, and a friendly disengagement from dispute becomes available now. This is the right moment to make a goodnatured retreat from any conflict. You have your own own unique calling. Preserving integrity with 33, staying loyal to the path with 56, ‘just passing through’ – an unusually good match.

It would say to stick to the journey, not walk away, remain goodnatured and don't stir the pot. Know that you are the one walking into the company, the 'outsider' so to speak, and behave appropriately for that. Like the above quote "just passing through", walking in and interview, and slide right back out.

Just the angle I saw on this, hope this helps.
Please tell us what happens.

Thanks for you reply AQ.
I've been offered the job today, and I'll accept it.

I had had a feeling that this 'retreat' may have something to do with disengaging from the situation, not getting too involved with it, like what you say about sliding in and out. I went to the interview with an odd disinterest in the outcome, and unsure if I wanted it.

56 Travelling could be about keeping my head down and getting along with their ways, or indeed that this is a situation I am briefly passing through -- given my plans I think both could be true.

The sojourner finds the right course to take, and a friendly disengagement from dispute becomes available now. This is the right moment to make a goodnatured retreat from any conflict.

The job is actually to do with helping people to manage conflict in their lives.

I got this hexagram while interviewing for my current job a few months ago. In retrospect I think the "noble retreat" and traveling has to do with (literally) a long commute and more importantly, not really fitting in with the company culture and therefore having to suppress who I am quite a bit and live with being an outsider (most of the people I work with are significantly younger, and my INFP/INFJ meaning-and-mission-driven personality is not a good match for the company values, which are profit-focused and pretty demanding). However, it's a good job on many levels, there are some great people, and it's something I need to do right now to have some long-term options, so I have to strike that balance between being internally true to myself and in integrity while going along with the requirements of the job as a traveler and doing so with grace.

Hope that helps.
