A close person to me has just passed away. And of course, this left me with many questions. I tend to believe in a soul or spirit that leaves our body when we die but now I began to doubt it all and a possibility of death as simply ceasing to exist entered my mind. So I asked iChing what happens to us/our soul when we die and got 38.1 > 54

How would you interpret it?

i think Yi might be saying that it's very different from what we know, as Hilary puts it: "Hexagram 38 is called 'Opposition': it means things that are separated, strange, and staring at things. It has to do with whatever is strange and different, and with seeing things in a different way."
The changing line and the relating hexagram - depending on your believes - could be indications of next incarnation, but that's a wild guess. Btw, 38.1 changes to 64.
I am sorry for your loss.

Oh yes, 64! sorry about that.

I read somewhere that Hexagram 38 is about "separating" or moving in different direction. When I asked the question, I was thinking about soul and the body and that answer seemed to have said that the two separate. Go in different direction? Perhaps, with the line 6.. we see it from a wrong perspective.. as something horrible but it is not so.. And 64 just adds: It's not over.

Or it could be just my wishful thinking?

That's my thoughts exactly :bows:

I'm sorry. I messed up. So the Hexagram is 38.6 changing to 54. I was looking at the line 6 and I wrote 1. Well in either case, it's still the "separating" hexagram. I just don't understand the context of 54.

Ane the line reads:

6. Shows its subject solitary amidst the (prevailing) disunion. (In the subject of the third line, he seems to) see a pig bearing on its back a load of mud, (or fancies) there is a carriage full of ghosts. He first bends his bow against him, and afterwards unbends it, (for he discovers) that he is not an assailant to injure, but a near relative. Going forward, he shall meet with (genial) rain, and there will be good fortune.

jching, no need to apologize, it happens. Wilhelm is not most popular on boards here, but me - i switch back and forth between various interpretations and translations, depending on which one makes sense in the context; check out the text accompanying 6th line:
Here the isolation is due to misunderstanding; it is brought about not by outer circumstances but by inner conditions. A man misjudges his best friends, taking them to be as unclean as a dirty pig and as dangerous as a wagon full of devils. he adopts an attitude of defense. but in the end, realizing his mistake, he lays aside the bow, perceiving that the other is approaching with the best intentions for the purpose of close union. Thus the tension is relieved. The union resolves the tension, just as falling rain relieves the sultriness preceding a thunderstorm. All goes well, for just when opposition reaches its climax it changes over its antithesis.
Doesn't it sound like karma being worked of and completed?
The Marrying Maiden in that contest might indicate your own bonds with the departed soul - whether in some previous lives or in the ones to come.
