There was an event at a bookstore I was a little intrigued by, but was not sure was worthwhile.

Should I go?
(WB translations)
24.1 Return > 2 The Receptive
.1: Return from a short distance. No need for remorse. Great good fortune.

Huh, I thought. What could this mean? Did return mean to stay home, or was return an urge to return to a bookstore which I loved? I chose to take the second meaning.

I get there at the appointed time. Turns out I hadn’t read the fact that the event was happening at a different location of that bookstore.

Whoops. True I only went a short distance to get to the bookstore... guess I had to return from that distance, but no big deal. Maybe it was all for the better I missed it! :)

That is funny!

But from a trying-to-learn standpoint, I wonder what was behind this answer. Had you already more-or-less made up your mind to go, subconsciously, since that's what you ended up doing after you got an ambiguous reading? Would you have gone to the correct location, if you'd known, or were you only interested because you thought it was close?

There are readings which can indicate you've gone wrong, are making a bad assumption or something (I can't list them, offhand), but I don't think I would have seen 24.1 like that, either. (But am putting this in my notes, thanks for sharing!)

Well, the other location wasn't so much farther away, just a bit. I think I would have gone had I known it. Though why didn't I read that fact? Why was I careless about that?

When dealing with the unconscious these things are very hard to say. I think part of it was that I wanted an excuse to just visit that bookstore and be in that part of town, and this was it, and so perhaps that was really the important thing, and not the event per se.

The Legge translation makes the error thing a little clearer:
.1: "The first line, dynamic, shows its subject returning from an error of no great extent, which would not proceed to anything requiring repentance. There will be great good fortune."

Similarly Siu's commentary: "At the outset, the man returns to the original course of goodness after a minor setback. There is no cause for remorse since the evil is put aside quickly."

Ah, thanks. (Note to self: good example of why it pays to read more than one author.)

I once showed up to a wedding, 800 miles away (!), on the wrong day, so... (in my case, I don't think there was any deep subconscious reason, I'm just not what we would call "observant" haha).

I hope you enjoyed it! :)
