Etymology of the ideogram Heng.32

Two figures are drawn side-by-side to illustrate hexagram 32. On the left is the character for Heart, general symbol for any situation concerning Thoughts and Emotions. It has here adopted its compressed form, as is always the case when part of a composed ideogram. On the right is a symbol for an object found In Between two parallel limits. It illustrated a Boat Crossing A River, with the top and bottom horizontal strokes representing the shores. Starting from this image from a boat in between this character, when used in an isolated form, adopted the meaning To Go From One extreme To The Other.

Associated to this particular moment when the Moon is shaped as a boat, it is used to designate the period from the decreasing quarter until the new moon crescent; (the period when the Moon is no more visible in the night sky).

Two ideas are born from this association with the Moon: going through a period (by analogy) as a moonless night and, the constancy of change. From the ever-changing Moon is born the regularity of the calendar:

And so is said : hexagram 32, in the very middle of the Yi constancy rules.

That this ideogram describing this hexagram be qualified by the symbol Heart is a unique particularity amongst the names of the sixty-four hexagrams. This singularity confirms that what is written describes what is felt and not some theoretical reflection about duration: The determination that must sustain the Heart when confronted to the difficulties of a dangerous and hazardous crossing (as a boat in-between).

from the universal perspective, and so unconsciously seeding the local associations, we have expansive binding (thunder in upper - awareness) in context of contractive binding (wind in lower - cultivation) - and so "from/with cultivation comes awareness" - the genetic feeling is on commitement (focus, through being cultivated one becomes more aware and so more commited etc - and so the link to the 'heart')

The infrastructure is described by analogy to:

011100
100001
--------
111101 - 14 working from the centre, directing etc

32 shares space with 50; 32 is unconditional, 50 is conditional.

In a way it the unchanging concept of changing life. What is constant; something fixed, something that lasts long time, enduring.

Hex 31 is the mutual attraction of young lovers while Hex 32 a long lasting marriage.
