This hexagram describes a certain anxiety: to go outside and to feel small and shy and overwhelmed. Exceding could mean to overcome this anxiety, to be cautious, but to step out.

When you think about this hexagram, you may think about the preceding hexagram as well, 61, Inner truth. This is a counterbalance. It may also help you to find out what you are afraid of.

All the best!

It looks like you're asking for advice - is that correct?

Yi is saying "stay small"...that might be advice if your anxiety is somehow caused by not doing that, by flying too high in some area.

Copying Hilary's translation:

Oracle
'Small exceeding, creating success,
Constancy bears fruit.
Allows small works, does not allow great works.
A bird in flight leaves its call,
Going higher is not fitting, coming down is fitting.
Great good fortune.

Image
'Above the mountain is thunder: Small Exceeding.
A noble one in actions exceeds in respect,
In loss exceeds in mourning,
In spending exceeds in economy.'

Is there anything in any of that which reminds you of the thing or things that's causing your anxiety? Have you "gone too high" in something, is your anxiety about your finances, anything in your life where you're "exceeding" in something and it's stressful? Then Yi could be telling you to come back down to earth in that area, fly a little lower, and your anxiety will improve.

Of course it's possible to have anxiety without being able to identify a cause, when, objectively, there doesn't seem to be anything to be anxious about. (Our minds don't always care about "objectively" - if they want to be nervous, they will be.) So if none of this makes sense to you, we'll have to try to think of something else.

That's a good point, and it reminded me of something else that 62 might say.

62 says "exceeds in" various virtues: respect, mourning, economy. (I don't really understand the "mourning" part.)

It could be that even if you think you're not flying too high in any way, that nothing you're doing seems risky - by giving you this hexagram, Yi might be saying you have to go even farther, maybe fly lower than you think is necessary, and that's how to deal with your anxiety.

Financially, for example (I have no idea if money is any part of your anxiety, but it makes a good example) - what one can "afford" to spend isn't entirely dictated by how much is in their bank account. It depends on what it's being spent on, how stable one's life is, whether there's enough savings to feel comfortable - all kinds of things.

I tend to go too high in my mind. It is a good advice to try to fly lower. Thank you

Don't take on too much or look too far ahead. Just pay attention to the here and now, being slow, careful, concerned with details.

I once asked why, when I was sad/depressed/ upset I needed to sit very very still. My whole instinct was to sit still. I had this answer several times. It does say 'if one is mourning exceed in mourning' something like that. it is giving yourself space and time to experience fully your feelings without external distraction. To 'exceed in' is to go beyond the usual amount of time and care one might normally give. So if sad, you sit still, you allow space for those feelings, you treat them carefully, you pay them respect.

Yes. Wonderful advice, Trojina. I usted to live that way, embracing the fulness of the sensation or feeling but I am more usted to do it with sadness or joy than with anxiety that is a more difuse state. May be I need to go back to meditation. Thank you

It is a long story but I tend to be anxious plus have had very difficult and uncertain years. For sure mourning was more than included. That is accurate in the iching reading. Your answer and trojina's, even if I don't follow an organised religion, remind me a passage of the Bible:To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:A time to be born, a time to die;a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;A time to kill, and a time to heal;a time to break down, and a time to build up;A time to weep, and a time to laugh;a time to mourn, and a time to dance;A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;A time to get, and a time to lose;a time to keep, and a time to cast away;A time to rend, and a time to sew;a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;A time to love, and a time to hate;A time of war, and a time of peaceThis brings tears to my eyes but it is just as it is. There are so many things that escape our control and it is acceptance the only solace and the only thing that let us recognising the never stop nature of change, change is equal to life and in a life it is death.

Hmm you have the answer in yourself. Your inner voice.. Maybe those excercises of stretching the muscles and relaxing them while breathing could be useful, to listen to your body. The pigs and the fish are fears and barriers of the mind, you will let them go...Also, talk with a lot of people, dont follow all their advices, it will help u to get the answer in yourself, the one that resonates more in ur body. Watch people dealing with that efficiently. Then, start to go outside in situation from the most tense to the one u can deal easily, or do the reverse! The method helps. When i had anxiety for a thing, I chose to face it as if it was a domestic animal and I said, ok i must do it, so i will do it. After that, all the other anxious things i had avoided became suddenly easier than this one ahahah

Hi! and thank. Would you get deeper about treating a problem or issue as a domestic animal?
