A lot of people around me have been talking about preparing for "the coming crises" and hoarding food and preparing for survival and all that so I did a reading...

Is there anything to what these people are saying?
Hexagram 36 changing lines 1, 2 and 3 becoming Hexagram 7

Seems kind of ominous, I dunno, what do you guys think?

Hahaha, finally a question that isn't about "X"! Very interesting notatirem. I don't know anyone around here who's preparing for "the crisis", but I'm assuming they're talking about 2012 or some similar apocalyptic thing. Unless you have a storm coming through or something. Let's look at the hexagrams

From Darkening of the Light to The Army.......

yeah, I can see how that would be ominous.

Looking at the hexagrams you have the sun beneath the earth, which gets pushed down through the change of the bottom three lines.

Assuming your question is Are We Doomed? I see in the hexagrams a certain loss, or "falling away". The people are collecting to protect their security, but when their security is threatened, they only collect harder. Maybe it's a no, and the I Ching's merely showing you the situation for what it is. How are the people around you being threatened, this is something to consider.

edit: also to consider is that the inner trigram (the inner situation) completely changes, but the outer stays exactly the same. Could indicate that, "it's all in the head".

This could certainly indicate some sort of economic crisis, which would be solved in a non-apocalyptic way:

I do not believe in 2012 prophesies or anything, but I do see signs of some sort of global depression in the offing. It has happened before, as here in the US in the '30s and '40s, and people get through as best they can, with government help where it is indicated.

36. Wounded Brightness

Line 1:

Wounded brightness during flight,
lowering its wings.
The noble one on a journey,
for three days does not eat.
Having a place to go to.
The master and the people have a talk.

Being weakened in the course of pursuing a goal. One is giving up necessities in order to put as much of one's energy and recources as possible into the pursuit. It is a good idea to discuss the situation with those involved.

Line 2:

Wounded brightness.
Injured in the left thigh,
using a horse for rescue.
Strength brings good fortune.

Being hurt and getting saved. If one is strong, things go well.

Line 3:

Wounded brightness at the winter hunt in the South.
Getting a great start.
It is not possible to be fast and dedicated.

Despite having a good start, things go slowly. It is not possible to speed things up.

Hexagram is changing to:

7. The Army

The army.
Persistence of elder people brings good fortune.
Without fault.

Lines 1 and 2 contradict one another. Line 1 wants to fly but his wings are drooping down. Line 2 escapes with the help of a strong horse.

In fact line 3 contradicts Lines 1 and 2. It says don't become a fanatic about it. The Blofeld translation says, "Persistence amounting to madness should be avoided."

Sometimes hexagram 36 does not represent a real harm but a harm we are fearful of.

The yang pattern is 11 and the yin pattern is 12.

I have to admit I can't make sense of this reading. It seems to be saying that some will feel conflicted and want to leave, but won't be able to. Some are strong and will be able to get away from any threatening conditions. And some will become fanatical hoarders of food. Perhaps the question should be asked a different way? Why don't you ask a different question, with the focus more on yourself?

By the way, there was a persistent, life-threatening heat wave and drought in Texas last year that really parched the earth and had a lot of people scared. Some died. The ground was so dry it cracked, bursting water pipes. The population could be particularly jittery because of all they suffered through last year in Texas.
