No it isn't necessary to 'preserve calm' at all. Yi can answer when you are in any state of mind indeed better when one is aroused in my experience.And, last but not least, it is of utmost importance that you try to preserve a calm and focused mind when you invoke the hexagram.
To be moved by something doesn't mean one can't proceed slowly. I don't mean one shouldn't consult when one has strong feelings, on the contrary, the best moments are those in which we are lost, for the answer becomes much more clear, compensating our inner confusion. But even so, if one doesn't adopt a receptive state of mind, by moving slowly, it is harder to receive the message the Yi gives us.
