We often discuss whether the I Ching is useful for making predictions. Here's an example of how it is.

Two days ago, Saturday, I was watching the Masters golf tournament on TV . A very big-deal event in the golf world. World #1 player Rory McIlroy had been struggling, almost eliminated on the first day, gained a little ground but not much on days 2 and 3. I am a big fan, was worried.

I used LiSe's online casting. What will happen on Sunday? The hexagram, changing line, and second hexagram were accurate without question. I usually consult several sources and come here and read several similar threads, but didn't need to this time,

46: SHĒNG

Step by step

Ascend
Eminent expansion
Benefit seeing the great man
Do not worry
To set things right in the South: auspicious

The great image says:
Earth center gives birth to wood: ascending
The noble one, with devoted character, accumulates small things to become tall and big

Earth
Wind
day 14 of a yin moon

Man wants to go one step ahead of what he is. It gives satisfaction, self-confidence, and a purpose in life. It makes life exciting and full of promises.
Don’t do it for others eyes. That may be rewarding too, but only temporarily.
Ascending is an act of growing. What is done by acquiring is something else, and by acquiring it is not one’s self that ascends. Acquiring cannot create stairs to Heaven, but ascending can. And the number of steps does not matter. Every step is important - especially the first one.
Do not live past or future, but live the moment, developing itself step by step, like a plant, growing around obstacles. Its goal is not somewhere out there, but in itself, an inherent plan. It is one with what it becomes.

Yes, Rory ascended the leader board, one step (hole) at a time. Set things right in the South, literally, as the Masters is held in Augusta, Georgia, a gracious Southern city. Golf is an extraordinarily in-the-moment game, concentration required to stay focussed in spite of crowds, wind shifts, all kinds of external things, and especially one's own mind and emotions. Champion golfers are Zen masters, I believe. with the additional requirement of actually developing and honing skills in the shifting realities of the time.

46.5: Determination auspicious.
Ascend the stairs. Proceed inch by inch, without skipping steps, then you will attain a lasting result. You will have it in control, and it will be strong enough to exist by itself. The reason for its strength is, that every step comes out of your own soul, you are what you do. No one can ever stop this.

Rory made birdie after birdie with no bogeys, ascending the leader board. Ended up in 4th place, which was beautiful to watch. He needed to be in the top 5 to maintain his reputation and confidence. So this was a lasting benefit.

Changing to or in this case, it seems, Coming from:

Hexagram 48 The Well

I particularly like this:
But your own well never dries up. The source is always there, but it will only fill the well if it is being taken care of.
Never leave the place where your well is situated.

Rory was quoted last week saying that golf was not as exciting for him as it once was. Yikes, what a terrible place for this 26-year-old phenom to be a couple of days before a very important tournament. He apparently psyched himself out, made a really terrible showing --- until the last day when he achieved a record-tying score that brought him up into the top five.

He left his well, but came back.

And all's well that ends well:)

Heres a link to LiSe's hexagram 48. The picture of the old Chinese well looks -- with a little imagination -- like a hole on a golf course. We often discuss whether the I Ching is useful for making predictions. Here's an example of how it is.
