Hi Sliponshoe

Yes, there are a few techniques for that.
Here, some ideas:

1.- Before asking when X would happen, one needs to know for sure that X will happen. So, this "direct" question can mislead easely (see "timing for an earthquake" in this forum)

2.- In traditional teachings, when you ask a "General Diagnosis" about X situation, the answer includes a time-frame. So, if you ask "General Diagnosis for my search for job", if one moving line implies that you got the job, you can derivated from that line when it would happen.

3.- In mathematical method happen something like that. If you ask "Would I find a job within the next 6 months?", the entire hexagram points if you will or won't. And the particualr line that points you get the job also points the month.

I would suggest you to do the first question ("General diagnosis for my search for job"), and maybe we could comment about it in the forum.

Best wishes

I asked about the general job situation and i got:

50.4 moving to 18
does that mean i'm gonna get a job in four months time?

I personally don't think it's a good idea to use the Yi to predict the future, like getting to know when something is going to happen. Yi reflects intent, not something set in stone.

If you get a prediction that you will gonna get a job in four months time, you might as well do nothing, right? But if you do nothing, you might miss out on doing what's needed to get a job, and the prediction might not come true. So it's better to use the Yi to help you with all the opportunities you get, and not to worry about when you're going to succeed.

Hi Sliponshoe

I'll tell you, how I would read the answer; I want to clarify that I'm not judging your life, this are just some commentaries about the reading.

Nowadays, your "job situation" is like a broken couldron. The couldron allows you to nourish yourself, just like the job do (general sense of hex 50), but in this days is not fulfilling this intention (line 4 of hex 50). So, you should move to repair what was spoiled (tendential hexagram 18).

Wilhelm comment about line 4 of hex 50: "A man has a difficult and responsible task to which he is not adequate. Moreover, he does not devote himself to it with all his strength but goes about with inferior people; therefore the execution of the work fails. In this way he also incurs personal opprobrium."

As you can see, this is a strong (even rude) advice of Yi Jing about the object of the question.

Calendaric calculations:
This time rules from November 1, 2005 to January 31, 2006. is almost over. This doesn't mean that you'll get a job in February 2006; it just mean that you have until January 31 to repair what is spoiled related to your job situation.

Line 4 rules from December 16, 2005 and January 1, 2006. So, you should look at facts within those date, to find what was spoiled. And fix it.

Best wishes

P.S: In the way I see it, there is a subtle diference between ask "diagnosis of my job situation", and "diagnosis of my SEARCH for new job".
Seems to me like the answer you got is pointing, most of all, to nowadays unemployment situation.

thanks for the info. it might seem i don't devote myself fully to the job search but the problem is there are no jobs available and i'm not even sure what line of work i wanna be in.
but tell me, jesed: how do you know line 4 means november 1 till january? what time period does one line cover? and why does it start november 1?

Hi Sliponshoe

If you read the complete Wilhelm comment about line 4 (I didn't write it complete), you could find diferent reasons for the broken couldron:
a) Because the task is beyond the consultant forces
b) Because the consultant doesn't make the effort
c) Because the consultant is in the wrong place

Now, it could be useful for you asking:
a) Am I searching for "too-high" responsabilities; beyond my forces?
b) Am I searching without personal commitment?
c) Am I searching in wrong places? areas?

Of course, I wouldn't say is reason a, b o c. Only you can say it to yourself.

Best of all, keeping in mind the previous general question and it answer, you could ask now: What should I do to solve this Couldron Time?

Hope this inner-questions could help you.

In this tool, inner trigram points to the start of the calendaric time, and outer trigram points to the end of the time. So the Time goes from inner trigram-date to outer trigram-date.
