Big storm and hexagram 21

I live in Pennsylvania, and a huge storm is heading to the east coast. I asked, 'What will this storm bring me?" I got 21 changing to 63.

I just thought I would share the reading. I get the 'thunder and lightning', but I don't have any ideas about 63. Sometimes it seems that the more readings I do, the more confused I get.
And I wonder, do most people stick with just one source for interpretation? I shop around and see what different sources say. Maybe it would be better to stick to one?

I tend to use one source, the Eranos I Ching, which has the many English definitions of each Chinese character spelled out, plus explanations of the ideograms. It's almost like a "build your own translation" book. Other than that, I use the Wilhelm/Baynes and the Wing, in case I need commentaries. As for having problems with interpreting, I see here you have a whopping FOUR changing lines, so I might suggest not focusing on the lines and instead focusing on the general meanings of the two hexagrams you received. In fact, I often use this for every reading, unless the lines really "jump out" at me. The real meat is title of the Hexagrams, and what Wilhelm calls the Judgment and the Image.

So in this case, you're asking about an actual weather event, so it's really apt to look at the Image, which you've already done. First is thunder and lightning... changing to water above fire. The fire moves down into a proper but unstable place below water. This could mean that the storm will be properly handled, but result in instability. The correct action to take here is exemplified by "fire" and explained in the Image as brightness (i.e. intelligence, clarity, etc.) ... leading to providing for defending against it. The "it" here is the storm. You must prepare for it.

The judgments enforce this but also show that it is useful to have someone with opposite ideas to help you along in this storm. Say, if you're extremely fearful, talk to someone who underestimates the storm. Or, if you're completely cool, get someone scared for their life. You can't be too calm and you can't be too cool, level yourself out with an opposing tendency. Also, hex 63 says that when the storm seems over, don't let down your guard down too soon. I don't stay with one source for interpretations. I have about 20 translations and commentaries and intuition seems to guide me in my choice of the proper one for the question asked. I think it's important to use more than one source, so as not to get too dependent on and limited by one particular version.

Hurricanes are oppressive and bring water. Hexagram 63 has an association with boats. Do you live in a floodplain?

Thanks for your concern everyone. We seemed to be really lucky here so far, just damp. All around us is flooding and wind damage, but here even paper bags did not blow off my porch. Just wanted to let you know. That's one thing about reading through these threads to try to learn- I never hear the end of the story, how it turned out or how accurate it was. Turned out that here at least, there was nothing to worry about at all.
Oh, and no boats- we're on top of a hill I was mostly worried about the wind.

Let's hope and pray, for those that do, for Barb/bamboo out in Long Island, which was especially hard hit, NYC members, our dear friend Luis in NJ. I have family in NJ and NC, waiting to hear from them. This is thus far devastating the northeast, and it's still moving inland.

Regarding your reading, 21 - fire and shock; much of nyc is on fire, all of the northeast is in shock.

63 is debatable, depending whether you interpret it as already across or already crossing/committed. My position is the latter, so at the time you asked this question, nothing could stop it from moving through where it would go.

Looking at Tannin's casting of 21.3.4.5.6>63 as a transitional hexagram brings up some interesting results, too:

The storm was already underway (63) when Tannin wrote and was biting its way through (21). It went from...

30.3 - singing and beating on the pot to...
27.4 - the tiger pursuing his desires to...
51.6 - the shake being in your neighbor, not you.

I'm so glad it turned out fine for Tannin and my thoughts are with everyone else who was in Sandy's path!

At the hour of your reading: it will be raining soon.
Theory: 乙卯时 (stem: female wood, branch: female wood rabbit) hour, 乙庚化金，作雨, line 2兄弟 (brother) 庚寅木 (stem: male metal – branch: tiger wood). Brother line means wind, couple with rain in that hour of the reading.

Line 3: wealth line (male metal stem; branch; dragon earth) means clear sky changing into parent line 父母己亥水　世 (female earth stem, pig water branch) – means changing into rain (pig water).

癸亥日: day of reading (all water) rainy day.

Hexagram 63 means 如火火既济，己亥持世，便断阴晴不定。Line 3 of 63 is 己亥 (female earth stem, pig water branch), this means the weather is uncertain, sometimes cloudly, sometimes clear.

Line 4 of 21 is a change line. 官鬼己酉金 (officer line, female earth stem, female metal roster branch) means thunder. The thunder will die down with time because the change line is官鬼戊申金 (officer line, male earth stem, male metal monkey). The metal element moves one step backwards. This means thunder dies down with time.

Line 5 is a change line (财为晴 wealth line - sky turns clear): 妻财己未土 (wealth line, female earth stem; branch female earth, ram) change to 妻财戊戌土 (wealth line, female earth branch; stem: male earth, dog). Wealth line means sky turning clear with time.

Line 6 means cloud reappears because this is the children line. It changees to parent line (父为雨), meaning rain returns again.

This explanation is based on my analysis of the "fire pearl forest 火珠林" Iching textbook, chapter 54/55.

I got 59 about this storm repeatedly (anxious in Brooklyn) as it approached. Still pondering what that meant. Also received 38.4 & 34.4, in answer to how much destruction to expect. A couple instances of 49.6, and 43.1.2.3.4.5 in the aftermath.

29.2.6 > 20

I live in lower Manhattan and the day before the storm I got 29.2.6 > 20. The 20 indicated that I was continuing to observe without preparing. You see, last year another hurricane came through and it was preceded by a lot of hoopla. But when it got here it was very mild and did not cause much trouble. So people were thinking that was going to happen again. But my I Ching reading told me that Sandy would really be dangerous, and to go out and buy supplies.

Where I was the Hudson River overflowed its banks and some of the buildings around here had flooded basements. In downtown Manhattan, it looked like the East River was going to meet the Hudson River, as water was pouring into the financial district from all directions. The financial district is very low-lying and anyone who has ever seen a picture of lower Manhattan knows that the buildings are right at sea level. On Wall Street, the water was up to about the ceiling of the first floor in some of the buildings.

It's been very trying, but my husband and I got through the crisis okay. We were without electric power for about four days but never lost our access to fresh water.

About 1.4 million customers are still without electric power in New Jersey, I hear. Maybe about 30,000 to 40,000 people cannot return to their homes in NYC, because their homes have been damaged by flood waters or for some other reason related to the storm. I hear that many people are now living in their cars. They are urged to go to shelters and also to apply for aid from the various organized agencies that are now on the scene helping out with this large scale disaster.
