Rambling around the site I found by chance this thread on birth hexagrams:
http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/showthread.php?t=3507
LiSe provided a link to an interesting website where one's yin yang horoscope, comprising of two hexes, each one with a ruling line, can be calculated. I obviously gave it a try... Has anyone else experienced this method? What do you guys think of it?

Dear cris,

I use it daily, and know all the different ways to form Birth Hexagrams.

It is a whole school of study. If you mastered it, you can calculate down to the hour of each day what happen to your life. And of course you should know in advance what is good or bad in the next 10-50 years or next year....

Thank you Water 0n Earth (aka hex 8? ;))

It's intriguing. Could you recommend sources - books, articles, websites, etc. - to familiarize myself with this methodology?

Cris,

Well, too bad that you do not read Vietnamese, my website www.tuvilyso.net or www.tuvilyso.org have free software and free books for people to download; however, it is no use to you.

My plan is to translate all that, but still I am too busy. Hopefully, It should be done sometime next year or so.

The point of the hexagrams, of the I Ching is continual change. I have really never bought the idea that one hexagram, one line, could be fixed as ones birth hexagram. Its not a helpful idea I don't think. It may encourage one to too much self labelling.

You are correct Trojan. It is changing every year, every month, every day... You will have nine years for each Yang line, and 6 years for Yin line (the line of 9 and 6). Then from that each year will change to a different Hex, after 9 changes or 6 changes, it will change to the next line from the Original Hex. After all 6 lines changes, then it will move to the changing Hex. For example if a person born on feb. 25 1946 at 6:30 am which is Jan 24 1946 of lunar calendar. (This is a birth chart of a Doctor)

In order to form a Birth Hex we have to transform the birth chart into Stem and Branch from the Ba Zi of the year month day and hour a per son born. At the moment I have no time to do that. However, his Birth Hex should look as the following:

——— * 1-9 Yang Fire Tiger (Self)
— —43-48 Yang Fire Mouse
— —37-42 Yang Fire Dog
——— 28-36 Yang Wood Dragon
——— 19-27 Yang Wood Tiger
——— 10-18 Yang Wood Mouse
This Hex is the Hex of the 11 month of lunar (anybody born on that month would be rich or famous).

Changing to Hex 12:

——— 73-81 Yang Water Dog
——— 64-72 Yang Water Monkey
——— 55-63 Yang Water Horse
— — 49-54 Yin Wood Cat (Self after Yielding)
— — 88-93 Yin Wood Snake
— — 82-87 Yin Wood Goat
This is the Hex of the 7 month of lunar year (anybody born on that month would be rich and famous)

He passed away in March 26 2004. So we should read line 4 of the Hex 12 from 55-63 years old.

Once we have a year we can form the Hex for the month. The month is changing in a different way, I do not have time to explain it now.

However, if we read line 6 of Hex 24 we should know what would happen in 2004.

Now you can see Birth Hex is continual changing right, Trojan? However, you make it sound like people in 100 years ago do not believe airplane could fly or there is no computer or if there is it cannot work like it suppose to be...

There are many things in life that we do not know yet or ignorant of, but with an open mind maybe we can learn a thing or two.

Yes I think I tried that method a long time ago (or something similar) and felt it wasn't worth the effort, or it could have been I really didn't feel the need to know the future to that degree. In anycase the future is not entirely mapped out before us, we make it as we live it. While the notion of destiny must have some impact we do have many choices in life. I Ching helps us with those choices.

Cris asked everyone what they thought about birth hexagrams so I gave him (her ?) my view. I wasn't particularly addressing you or you methods or saying I did or didn't believe you, I was talking to Cris.

Thanks for expressing your stance, Trojan. I too beware of determinism. On the other hand I understand that the birth hexagrams as outlined by Water 0n Earth are somewhat similar to astrological birth charts, with the annual solar returns and the monthly moon returns. One of the key principles of astrology is that, as stated by Thomas Aquinas, stars impel but do not compel. I assume that similarly birth hexes show a potential only we can activate, or avoid.

Water, the method is indeed fascinating and I would like to know more. Do you have an idea whether the calculation of the birth hex available on the website linked by LiSe (www.hall-of-man.com) is accurate?

Oh, by the way, I'm a she :)

This www.hall-of-man.com site looks like one I'd like to get into more deeply one of these days but I'll probably lose the address before I get around to it..
Do we have a place here to post/store the addresses of interesting sites?

Dear Cris,

Yes. It is the same and it is correct. Let's use the Doctor's Birthday from my example.
HEAVENLY/EARTHLY MAGNITUDES FOR YEAR:
FIRE + (8) /EARTH + (5 & 10)
HEAVENLY/EARTHLY MAGNITUDES FOR MONTH:
METAL + (3) /WOOD + (3 & 8)
HEAVENLY/EARTHLY MAGNITUDES FOR DAY:
METAL + (3) /FIRE + (2 & 7)
HEAVENLY/EARTHLY MAGNITUDES FOR HOUR:
EARTH - (9) /WOOD - (3 & 8)
SUM TOTAL, HEAVENLY MAGNITUDE (Yang): 33
SUM TOTAL, EARTHLY MAGNITUDE (Yin): 36

Recorded birth date: 2/25/1946 6:30:00 AM
(NOTE! This server shows dates using the US format:
MM-DD-YYYY. It also uses the 12 hour AM/PM format when presenting the calculation.)
Subtracted Daylight Saving Time (DST): 0

Chinese season of the year: Rain Water (month 1*), commenced approx. 2/19/1946 6:13:00 AM

* The month given is not according to the Lunar Calendar. In this system the midpoint of the eleventh month coincides with the Winter Solstice and the astrological New Year.

A Man born in a Yang Year (even-numbered in the Western calendar) will have the trigram corresponding to the Heavenly Magnitude on top in his hexagram.

The Chinese names for birth hexagram and component trigrams

The below characters should be read as: "hexagram name period trigram name at the top, trigram name at the bottom period"

Upper trigram: Kên, Mountain, is cool, concentrated, watchful, planning
Lower trigram: Ch'ien, Heaven, is creative and mental, headstrong, autonomous

The trigrams may be approached in a number of ways. One is to view the upper as a general indication of the "outer" aspect and the lower as having to do with the "inner" aspect. But the degree of interplay between two trigrams may affect such a viewpoint. Also, in some cases the horoscope will tend to a description of the circumstantial side rather than giving an "inner" and "outer" part of one's being, while in others it does have a rather psychological implication. Often the objective and subjective aspects are mixed.

Birth hexagram number, name and provisional
interpretative translation:
26, TA CH'U (The Fosterer and Nourisher of Internals or Greatness)
Controlling line: 6 (counting from the bottom), a Yang line

The later nature calculation

The below characters should be read as: "hexagram name period trigram name at the top, trigram name at the bottom period"

Upper trigram: Ch'ien, Heaven, is creative and mental, headstrong, autonomous
Lower trigram: K'un, Earth, is receptive, responsive and physical, wide-ranging, sometimes closed

The Hou T'ien (Later Heaven) hexagram number, Chinese name and provisional interpretative translation:

12, P'I (The Standing still, or, the Obstructed Superior)
Controlling line: 3 (counting from the bottom), a Yin line

Birth horoscope auspiciousness

The birth hexagram's auspiciousness relative to its appearance in Time
Positive (1), negative (-1) or neutral (0) correspondence (the majority of people are born under relatively neutral auspices).
The favorability of the moment of birth is measured in several ways. Already the doubling of a trigram in a birth horoscope is considered a lucky omen. Also, the 64 fundamental birth hexagrams are of a different caliber, e.g. some spell out a more ambitious type of personality than do others. Some tend to focus on problem solving or show an analytical bent rather than will to power and so on. Some types are therefore less susceptible to hard luck or good, that is, low or high auspiciousness, than others. Read more

the Earthly Branches 1946: 1
Correspondence between the Heavenly and Earthly Magnitudes and their recommended size...
...relative to each other, and individual strength, taken one by one, for the Chinese Solar month of birth (1). Note on this particular omen.
Ideally the Heavenly Magnitude should be 0.83 times the size of the Earthly Magnitude this month and its season "Rain Water". In actuality Heaven is 0.92 times the size of the Earthly Magnitude which means Heaven and Earth as a couple diverge less than 50% from the ideal ratio for the month, increasing the favorability.

Heaven's and Earth's conformity to the ideal monthly values taken separately:

Heaven: -2
Earth: -1
Since the Yin and Yang, as mentioned, are still proportional to each other compared to the monthly ideal although individual deviations have occurred, favorability is introduced through the existence of this proportionality: 1

It is possible to receive a favorable judgement on the mutual relation between the heavenly and earthly magnitudes while one of them, taken separately, has ventured beyond that allowed for the month. This is because the allowed deviation from the norm is not the same for Heaven and Earth, and furthermore differs between months.

Line support
Support of the ruling line from a differently polarized line in the parallel position in the other trigram: -1

The presence of an analogously placed line (bottom/middle/top) in the other trigram, is supposed to mean that support and assistance will generally be forthcoming from other people.

Favorability sum total

Total, all omens: -1
The meaning or use of this set of additional omens is not at all clear. A review of the totals of all individual indications shows that one is four times more likely to receive a negative auspiciousnes (below 0) than a positive value! Research of a few hundred celebrity horoscopes shows that the question of auspiciousness appears to have no bearing at all on "getting somewhere" in life.

On this point, at least, it seems the original publishers of this system in English were dead wrong. Negative auspiciousness cannot hinder an enterprising and aspiring soul and it is not admissable to use it for a deprecating reading of the birth symbol!

On the other hand, it may be possible to find something insightful by investigating what trigram, magnitude et cetera, that contributes to the deviation from a neutral auspiciousness whether positive or negative. I would suggest that overly large or insufficient Magnitudes (relative to the season of the year) may be reflected in peculiarities of character and destiny. This is not a confirmed observation though.

According from the quote, Hex 26, TA CH'U (The Fosterer and Nourisher of Internals or Greatness), he is a doctor makes a lot of sense, right?

However, that is the same as we have an I Ching Translation and cast the Hexs in hope to predict the future, like a Pre-K want to be a doctor. It could become true but no less than 20 years of none stop studying. According to this study each person has different element from the year they were born as of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, and born in different month so their lives would be different... even with the same Birth Hex.

Furthermore, just as for those who ignorant of I Ching and we tell them that I Ching can help show them the way for the future, they will not buy it. That is why the people who do not believe I Ching much more than those do. Those who do not believe in this methodology are no different.

Well, from the example of the Doctor above, if he does not born on 1946 the year of Yang Fire stem and Dog branch, would he become a doctor?

Maybe he is not. Yang Fire = ☶ and the stem: Dog= ☰ is embedded in Hex 26 as following:

——— * 1-9 Yang Fire Tiger (Self)
— —43-48 Yang Fire Mouse
— —37-42 Yang Fire Dog
——— 28-36 Yang Wood Dragon
——— 19-27 Yang Wood Tiger
——— 10-18 Yang Wood Mouse

We see that Yang Fire Dog is starting from 37-42 at line 4. That is the best time of his life next to line 5. Even if line 4 means bad thing it is still good for the people who born on that year, but in this case it is good. The book of Yin Yang Horoscope said: "Anybody born in the year of Yang Fire Dog as a doctor, a Pediatrician, or who join an election will win, and will be rich or famous". Why it is Pediatrician is considered in this case? It is because ☶ means young boy, young people, to be nourish.

The next question is, if he was born on the month of the Monkey the 7 month of lunar calendar, would he die that early, and not that famous?

Of course it might not. If he was born in the month of the Monkey he would be one of the doctor that the world recognized and would long live. The reason for that is because 7 month of lunar is for Hex 12.

Let's talk about Bush Jr. Birth Hex, July 6 1946 at 7:50, same year as the example above. Bush's Birth Hex is as following:

53, CHIEN (The Gradualist, or, The Circumstantial)
Controlling line: 5 (counting from the bottom), a Yang line

——— 10-18 Yin Metal Cat
——— * 1-9 Yin Metal Snake
— — 40-45 Yin Metal Goat
——— 31-39 Yang Fire Monkey
— — 25-30 Yang Fire Horse
— — 19-24 Yang Fire Dragon
This is the Hex for the 1st month of Lunar (those born in that month will be rich and famous), and those born in the year of:

1. Yang Fire: Dragon, Horse, Monkey
2. Yin Metal: Goat, Snake, Cat

The later nature calculation:
52, KEN (The Concentrated, or, The Keen-eyed, or, The Introverted)
Controlling line: 2 (counting from the bottom), a Yin line

——— 73-81 Yang Fire Tiger
— — 67-72 Yang Fire Mouse
— — 61-66 Yang Fire Dog
——— 52-60 Yang Fire Monkey
— — * 46-51 Yang Fire Horse
— — 82-87 Yang Fire Dragon
This is the Hex of 4 month of Lunar (Those born in the month of Snake will be rich and famous) and those born in the year of:

Yang Fire: Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Dog, Mouse, Tiger.

Especially the ones born in the year of the Tiger or Dog are call "Tiger and Dog laugh with the wind", means that they are like the horse with wings or a dragon horse, or a unicorn.

Former President Bush born on the month of the Horse is part of controlling line 2 in his later Birth Hex, and the year of Yang Fire Dog, and the Yang Fire Horse add together become Earth Element for that year. His Birth Hex meet the entire requirement to become a President or at least become one of the Political or financial, or a famous figure in the world. However, because of the controlling line 2 is Yin line, he is just a Vice President for Dick Cheney. If he becomes President now, our lives and the world would be a lot different.

What we have here are just some of many reasons, but many things the book do not covered, that is the way the Eastern is. All books are written for those who born to understand it, for those who are not, does not matter how many years they have learned, they will never get it.

FYI my Birth Hex is Hex 4 controlling line 6 and later nature calculation Hex 8. Therefore, I will beat up those ignorant but think they know it all and do not want to learn, and will help and give it all that I have to those who want to learn. That is exactly what my Birth Hexes spell out. I think everybody should see that from me by now! Up to this point every year things happen accordingly to my Birth Hexes. That is all I can tell you guys at this moment.

Since you asked, I agree with Trojan. It's the Book of Changes, not the Book of Fixations.
Why be stuck in one thing your whole life when you can live all 64? All 4096?
And anything based on the arbitrary human assignment of human number systems to natural events is going to be equally arbitrary, and no more meaningful in itself than reading clouds or tea leaves. Not to say that doesn't work - but it's just your own pareidolia and nothing to do with the Yi.
