Where I work the person at the top is the kind that calls you on the carpet and feels no compunction in listing out your shortcomings in front of others. Courtesy is not his forte, to put it mildly. Actually he can be downright insulting. You never know when he'll flare up and you get to be rather sorry if you're the one at the receiving end.

You get the picture.

He's not my direct boss and I don't have to deal with him every day, fortunately, but I have had my share of bad moments with him. To be frank, he intimidates me. And this is what bother me.

I once asked the Yi what my attitude should be towards him and got 47, unchanging. Shut up and get on with it. OK, I'd figured that one out on my own.

But today I asked: "What do I have to do to be able to stand up to X?" and got 21.1.3.5.6>31. I think that when there are too many changing lines you don't consult them, only the first and second hexagrams as a whole. 21 is Biting Through and 31 Influence. What can this mean?

31 is union, being close, exactly what I don't have with this person. And not what I want either. All I want is to be able to feel on a level with him. And be able to influence him more while being less influenced myself.

21 talks about sharp action, getting to the bottom of a situation. That's what I would like to feel capable of doing but the reading doesn't tell me how. Somehow I can feel that both 21 and 31 have something to do with the situation but I can't figure out in what way exactly. It resonates but doesn't show me a way. What's the deal here?

I think the biggest message is simply: "rise above it". 21 is Thunder and Lightning, a storm which brings conflict, the boss gnaws and bites at people and carries a storm of negative energy around him. But 31, the Mountain with Pond at the top, shows that you can gather your own people around you simply by rising above the storm, not taking a part in it. The best way to deal with negative people is to just ignore them. What's that saying about vampires "they can't come in unless they're invited".

The lines elaborate on the storm, and why you shouldn't try to indulge in it:

Locked up feet and covered ears (1 and 6), the person/people either gnaw on poisoned meat (3) or burnt, flavorless meat (5). The people are trapped in the storm (this guy berating them) due to lack of action, and misunderstanding, they partake of this only for meat which is unknowingly killing them or is simply flavorless.

Dear Flitzer,

I have always taken into consideration all the lines. So, that is the way I would interpret your reading.
The way I see it, the Y is telling you that is not up to you to do anything to influence this person, or take action to change his attitude, or try to feel on a level with him as you put it in your post. This person is unable to get your message, he cannot see or understand.

There is an element of punishment in Hex 21 Biting Through, but I think that is not up to you to get justice done here. This is described in your reading as an old issue that has been dragging on for a while.

You want to know what the deal is. In my view, the advice is to bite through the obstacles within you. The message is: build your own strength, a foundation as solid as gold, work on your character. Going to the bottom of the situation here means actually to deal with your own emotions and reactions and that will bring rewards.

Hope that helps.:bows:

Thank you mryou1 and mirian, your replies were most helpful because they answer my basic dilemma of should I or should I not try and influence/change/understand this person, and help me accept the fact that this is simply impossible. Much more productive would be to work on my own responses to the situation.

Bite down hard. Not on the real person but on its image in my mind. And find the lake on top of the mountain.

Thanks also about the point of consulting all lines. I learned another thing today.
