I can't load the Shen Shu thread completely...it stops at some point or another in one of Chris's looooooooooooooooong posts in that thread. And it wasn't even about the Shen Shu...grrrrrrr. I'm pretty sure the page is timing out before it can load completely.

I know there's a setting in my MSIE 6 browser where I change the default setting for the amount of time allowed to load a page. I just can't find it. I've been all through Tools/Internet options. Would some please kindly direct me.

Note to Chris: PLEASE have mercy on those of us who necessarily use dial-up. I really do find a lot of what you say very valuable. But it would greatly help if you would make a web page for some of the "atomic" structure information you provide in some of your longer posts and link to it, leaving the "cellular" information in a shorter and succinct post. Please please pretty please. Trying to access the Shen Shu page has been very frustrating, and I couldn't help but notice as I scrolled to the bottom...that never came, that a inordinate amount of the scrolling time was spent scrolling through just one of your posts.

Thank you thank you thank you!

Love,

Val

All I can suggest, Val, is accounts with several ISPs: when one goes pear-shaped, disconnect and move over. I haven't heard of this setting in MSIE - I thought it just ambled on until it loaded it all, or passed out in the attempt.

Having said that... I can't get it all, either. IE passes out, though I seem to get a little more every time I click 'refresh'. For technologically-advantaged people - can anyone load that page in its entirety in one go? Or is there something gone wrong with the page itself?

Dial-up Users Support Suggestions

Probably what makes pages take longest to load is big, unoptimised images. Even if you don't have the means to optimise photos, just reducing their dimensions a tad will make a big difference in the file size.

Other suggestion - since this is a forum, not an email list, there's no need to quote at length from previous messages in your posts!

And finally - please do feel free to start new threads, especially when the subject's changed anyway.

Hilary...

Yes I've found that a lot of people aren't aware of image size, and we get some rather large images that do not fit well in the common screen rez of 800 x 600, the rez which commercial web designers target.

I find the images' width often exceeds the approximately 550 width that will fit nicely in your yellow "main frame". And I end up having to scroll horizontally, line by line, to read the posts once those images have been loaded.

Because I find it such an inconvenience, I offer my services to anyone who wants to post images that are oversized. If you don't have the program to at least resize to an appropriate width, I will be happy to do that for you. I can also save your files for the web with Photoshop...meaning that they will be a suitable resolution to read well and load fast and will be optimized as well which will make them load even faster.

Further, I will not resize your original. I will make a copy for the web and return both to you.

Sincerely,

Val

Hilary, its not the page, other than being large. DSL loads quickly. IE time outs: I?m not sure but it doesn?t seem random unless it just crashes, so I?d think its timed.

A little practical economy makes a whole lot of sense. We should consider band width and site space when posting.

I agree, we don?t need to be reminded of everything said in our prior post. We can all add 2+2. (4?)

Hi, Val and everyone.

I use Internet Explorer, but I have a cable modem. I can load the entire Shenshu thread in less than three seconds. I scrolled from top to bottom, and all the posts are there. Cable is very nice to have, if you don't mind paying twice as much for Internet service.

Thank you, Val. That is a very kind and generous offer. I don't know how to size photos or upload them to the forum.

And I agree, it is unnecessary and inconsiderate to quote others' entire posts when replying. It is enough to quote just the specific part you want to answer in order to make your point clear to the reader.

Namaste,
Joan

Hi there everyone,

Thanks for the additional input about cable Joan. I don't really think it's about inconsideration that people quote others' posts. I think it's for clarity, and I think when people are generously sharing their knowledge and beliefs, they're just not thinking about data economy. And that's understandable. Further, if they have fast connections, they can't know how tough it can get for those of us with slow connections...unless we tell them, of course...which we seem to have amply done in this thread...*grin*

I appreciate your kind words, Candid and Joan, but I don't think I'm being any more generous than the people, like yourselves, on this forum who are so knowledgeable about the Yi and have so selflessly helped people like me who are not so knowledgeable. I'm getting better at understanding thanks to you and them. I still have a looooooong way to go, of course.

This is just one way I can give back (and avoid scrolling horizontally...*grin*). This is an area where I DO have some knowledge that I can share...and I would love to, if anyone cares to accept my offer.

With much love and appreciation,

Val

Thanks, Val!! I was thinking - do I offer... has number of hours in day been raised recently... maybe not... . Hm - while you're in generous mood, how are the profile photos looking nowadays?

If there are any images already uploaded that are causing aggravation, let me know the directory and file name, and I'll shrink'em. With due care, attention, tlc, and Xat Image Optimizer.

Now - anyone know how to persuade IE to go all the way on that page? I've never had this problem before, so do we have the longest page on the net? Should I venture into the darker regions of the admin section and see if it's possible to move half the posts to a new page?
