Can I change my destiny? Hexagram 32.4 to Hexagram 46.

Hexagram 32.4 is about persistence, but line 4 indicates that perseverance is not enough to bring about change. Perhaps, will power is needed or drastic action or motivation.

Hex 46 is about patience so maybe that implies things won't just happen, but with confidence and patience and can bring about the change which I wish.

32.4 has a number of interpretations, but IC never counsels fatalism. Neither does it ever counsel "drastic action." Work on the self, clarify your motives, check reality, act in the moment rather than in response to past issues or in anticipation of a projected future.... All that boring Taoist stuff...

"When strength is in the body of action, this is the time for doing -- this is like having fields to plow. If one then dwells in a position of weakness, the will inactive, constantly embracing the Tao but unable to put it into practice, that is like empty fields with no game to watch for. This is constancy without any action." (Liu I-ming)

"This line represents one who is constantly on the move; but being on the move is not something that can endure forever, so how can one catch the game? Only by stillness can one get something." (Chih-hus Ou-i)

"Don’t blame the field. If you catch nothing, you are either hunting at the wrong place or moment, or you did not prepare yourself. Hunting is a question of mind, not of hands. A good hunter does not need to run after the game, he waits at the right spot." LiSe http://www.yijing.nl/i_ching/index.html

"Nine in the fourth place means:

No game in the field.

If we are in pursuit of game and want to get a shot at a quarry, we must set about it in the right way. A man who persists in stalking game in a place where there is none may wait forever without finding any. Persistence in search is not enough. What is not sought in the right way is not found." (Wilhelm)

"Without a certain amount of discipline, you will not get what you seek" (Huang)

"Be certain that your goals are realistic. If you try to achieve things that are unlikely, no matter how vigorously, you will still accomplish absolutely nothing. Perhaps you should re-evaluate your desires.." (Wing)

Hello!

Just a couple of thoughts here.. If this was my reading, I would take the answer to be something like "No such thing us DESTINY.., you're not looking at the right direction here", or something like that..

There are certain conditions in life, "tendencies", influences that may pull you to one direction or another. Nothing is static, though. The energies are flowing endlessly and everything is re-shaped and re-formed by this continuous movement.. Nothing can tie you down to a certain "Destiny".. It takes persistence and devotion and accompishing many small goals one after the other to gradually grow and shape your own personal Destiny..

Well, maybe there's a lot of my personal views in what i just wrote but I think you got a beautiful answer.. " No game in the field ".. "No predetermined DESTINY".. It's all in your hands make the best of it!!

Good luck with that

Your responses make sense. The idea that "nothing is static and that energies are just flowing endlessly and everything is constantly reshaped unless there is persistence and devotion". So if I am hunting in the wrong field maybe I can understand the game and learn what it demands of me so I can adapt.

I think there is a destiny, otherwise how can we call death?

I think 32.4 is saying that the question can not be answered in any conventional or customary way. All you have to do is quantum leap ahead and then look back to the past, to know your destiny. But what fun would that be? It's the ongoing mystery that makes life interesting, makes life living rather than a documentary of ones past.
