I'm feeling kind of stuck and uninspired at my job - with no discernible path for growth (I report into the ceo). So i asked the i ching

"How do i find the right job for me" Result: 38.3

I have been considering just going off on my own and building a consulting practice. I asked if I should do that. Result: 20.4

How should I interpret all this?

Baffled and punished?
Bide time's amnesty.
Stay put, nothing you can change for now.

20.4 → 12 (Stagnating), Richmond:
Contemplating the glory of the kingdom, his advantage is to be a guest of the king.
I think that just reinforces the idea of continuing to be an employee.

As i see it:

The central problem here is the point of view.

38.3 tells you that if your situation seems difficult and the problems not clear, you can definitely confront the situation with a positive result; you have to open little by little your attitude to the others without renouncing your ideas.

20.4 is about a change of perception of things, from your personal situation to a larger view ("light of the kingdom" --- a company?). The "king" is someone who can give you help (the forum here) or your boss. Hexagram 12 tells you to retire and do nothing.

38.3 >> Current situation looks horrible, no way out in sight, all sorts of obstacles halting progress. This is how circumstances are perceived by the person who gets this line. It does feel like being punished (undeservedly). But this all going to change for the better, but in a way that you cannot see now. Your question was how to find the right job for you, but my experience with this line is that the job will find YOU. Drop any idea of confronting the situation, accept this moment and keep your eyes open.

20.4 >> This reading doesn't seem to support the idea of going on your own for now. This is the line of being a "guest", not the leader or the ruler. I see it as advising you to be very observant, analysing things, putting all elements into perspective, then you can make your own judgement and decision, rather than taking action based on what you see at the moment. That makes sense to me as it tallies with the other reading.
